Project Description

Within this composition, I used design elements and principles to display the feelings and emotions of two of my favorite songs. To create a stop-motion animation that goes beyond the surface level, I analyzed different beats, instruments, and pauses in each song. “Too Good” by Drake has a consistent beat and high intensity that focuses on the drums while “Quietly Yours” by Birdy transitions from light to heavy with a soft introduction and a piano focus. They harmonize together to display a story that celebrates love and heartbreak. This inspired the use of geometric shapes and color theory since they provide harmonious consistency within the composition and aid in storytelling. Combining reds and blues to make purples in the center of our composition reflects how harmonious the songs can be together. The blue triangle represents the sad, “blue” emotions felt from “Quietly Yours”. The red square represents the uplifting instrumental love story in “Too Good”. Using these simple geometric shapes allowed scale, movements, and the use of color to become more prominent within our composition. To then add contrast I implemented a 2D to 3D transition that represents the song’s introductory build. That being said, exploring stop-motion animation techniques for the first time was an extremely rewarding process that also came with some difficulties. Not knowing how many pictures to take and how large of movements to make were two of the biggest unknowns. These challenges became learning opportunities as we were able to overcome them.
