About Me

Hello! My name is Kayla Guarnieri and I am currently a freshman enrolled at The Ohio State University. As a first year, I am in the Green Engineering Scholars Program, OSU Society of Women Engineers, and Women in Engineering. I plan to major in Chemical Engineering, with a specialization in Biomolecular Engineering, and minor in Nuclear Engineering. I am interested in alternative energy sources and hope to utilize the chemcial and nuclear engineering experience to better the world in the pursuit for a better and green source of energy. For education before college, I attended Canton Early College High School and graduated from Stark State College of Technology with both an Associate of Science and an Associate of Arts with high distinction in May 2015, one week before I graduated as valedictorian with my high school diploma from Timken Senior High School, located in Canton, Ohio. The majority of my high school years were filled with being the team captain of the varsity volleyball team, a member of the yearbook committee, a member of Student Union, a member of C.A.S.T. (Caring and Serving Together), and a member of Interact Club. I have always been an avid volunteer and plan to continue that throughout my collegiate career. I love learning and am open to any opportunity afforded to me.

Year in Review

[ “Year in Review”  is where you should reflect on the past year and show how you have evolved as a person and as a student.  You may want to focus on your growth in a particular area (as a leader, scholar, researcher, etc.) or you may want to talk about your overall experience over the past year.  For more information, go to: http://honors-scholars.osu.edu/e-portfolio. My first year at The Ohio State University is surely one to remember! I grew a lot, made some amazing friends, and got myself involved on campus.

I’ve been saying that one of the first and best decisions I made as a freshman in college was to join a student organization called the Society of Woman Engineers, SWE for short. I went to their ice cream social after the Student Involvement Fair and thought to myself “I’m an engineering major and I’m a woman, so why not join?” as I sat through the brief presentation and talked to members of the organization. Since that day, I have only gotten more involved with SWE. I became an active member and regularly went to meetings and events. I joined the Big/Little Mentorship program where I was paired up with a different upperclassman per semester. I went on a leadership retreat with some members of the executive board. I was even elected to an officer position as a Freshman toward the end of the Spring semester. I have gained so much from SWE and am excited to be an officer this year and continue my involvement in the international organization. Below are a few pictures noting some specific opportunities I would not have experienced without SWE.

G.O.A.L.S.

[ “G.O.A.L.S.” is a place where students write about how their planned, current, and future activities may fit into the Honors & Scholars G.O.A.L.S.: Global Awareness, Original Inquiry, Academic Enrichment, Leadership Development, and Service Engagement. For more information, go to: http://honors-scholars.osu.edu/e-portfolio. Delete these instructions and add your own post.

Global Awareness: Students cultivate and develop their appreciation for diversity and each individual’s unique differences. For example, consider course work, study abroad, involvement in cultural organizations or activities, etc .
Original Inquiry: Honors & Scholars students understand the research process by engaging in experiences ranging from in-class scholarly endeavors to creative inquiry projects to independent experiences with top researchers across campus and in the global community. For example, consider research, creative productions or performances, advanced course work, etc.
Academic Enrichment: Honors & Scholars students pursue academic excellence through rigorous curricular experiences beyond the university norm both in and out of the classroom.
Leadership Development: Honors & Scholars students develop leadership skills that can be demonstrated in the classroom, in the community, in their co-curricular activities, and in their future roles in society.
Service Engagement: Honors & Scholars students commit to service to the community.]

Career

[“Career” is where you can collect information about your experiences and skills that will apply to your future career.  Like your resume, this is information that will evolve over time and should be continually updated.   For more information, go to: http://honors-scholars.osu.edu/e-portfolio. Artifacts

[Artifacts are the items you consider to be representative of your academic interests and achievements. For each entry, include both an artifact and a detailed annotation.  An annotation is a reflective description of the artifact that attempts to communicate its significance.  For more information, go to: http://honors-scholars.osu.edu/e-portfolio. The first artifact is a presentation that briefly details nanotechnology and how it is utilized in soil cleaning and has many other potential uses. This was a group collaboration between myself and three other students who are also a part of Green Engineering Scholars. This presentation acts as an insight to how specific advancing technology can be and the unlimited and invaluable uses for them.
