Artifacts

[Artifacts are the items you consider to be representative of your academic interests and achievements. For each entry, include both an artifact and a detailed annotation.  An annotation includes both a description of the artifact and a reflection on why it is important to you, what you learned, and what it means for your next steps.  For more guidance on using your ePortfolio, including questions and prompts that will help you get started, please visit the Honors & Scholars ePortfolio course in Carmen. G.O.A.L.S.

Global Awareness:  Throughout my years here at Ohio State, I hope to expand my global awareness in a variety of ways.  One way that I plan on developing an appreciation for other cultures and the world is by taking foreign language classes.  I plan on taking Spanish and, through this class, I will be able to learn how to communicate effectively in another language and develop a deeper understanding of Hispanic cultures.  I will also be able to expand my global awareness when I take Classics 2220H, a class that focuses on mythology from the Greeks and Romans. From this class, I will be able to learn more about other cultures from around the world in a historical and literature based approach.

Original Inquiry:  Though I have not taken apart in research lab yet, it is one of my goals here at Ohio State to take part in research during my undergraduate years.  Through research, I will be able to be a part of investigating different problems and working to aid in new discoveries. I have already done some research with a research PARE poster project in biology 1113H, which has allowed me to investigate and learn more about a variety of research done regarding antibiotic resistant bacteria.  Finally, in my first semester, I have been learning about lab techniques, which will prove beneficial in a research lab later in my academic career, in both my chemistry and biology labs.

Academic Enrichment: In order to achieve academic enrichment, I have worked to pick class schedules that challenge me and provide a solid background of knowledge that I can use later in my life when I apply to medical school.  For example, I picked biochemistry as my major of choice because the classes would provide a strong foundation for medical school admissions, in addition to it being an interesting field of study. Finally, I will GE classes that allow me to reach my academic potential.  I will take honors or high level GE classes to ensure that I will have rigorous, engaging curriculum and pick classes, like psychology and sociology, that will help me prepare and have a strong knowledge base for the MCAT. I will also pick GE classes that are appealing to me because, if I pick classes that I am interested in, I will be a more engaged student.  I have already worked towards academic enrichment this year by taking a first year seminar class in antique chemistry and physics. This class has allowed me to explore my interests in the sciences and given me a place to learn and discover new concepts with peers and an instructor who share my interests.

Leadership Development: I will be able to develop my leadership skills in a variety of ways during my time at Ohio State.  One place I can develop my leadership skills are in the clubs I am a part of. For example, I am a member of running club and, in the future, I could have the opportunity to run for leadership positions within the club.  In addition, I plan on joining clubs related to biochemistry and pre-med in the future. Within these clubs, even if I do not run for an officer position, I can be a leader through organizing small projects and helping my peers around me.  I can also be a leader in the classroom by making sure labs go smoothly in my groups or offering to my peers if I would be able to teach them a concept they do not understand.

Service Engagement:  Already this year, I have partaken in the Community Commitment service activity during welcome week.  For this service, I was able to help at Creative Living by assembling items they needed for an important fundraiser.  I plan on volunteering on the Community Commitment days in the future as well. In addition to this, I plan on volunteering with running club during their service projects and working to volunteer at the hospital as well.  Finally, I may look into joining a service oriented club next year.
