G.O.A.L.S.

During my time at Ohio State, I plan on taking full advantage of the resources at hand to increase my Global Awareness.  I believe that becoming more aware of the cultures and events across the globe not only makes us better scholars, but better citizens of our country, and of our planet.  I will pursue this goal by taking classes that challenge my perspective on other cultures and I plan on studying abroad as much as possible.  I have already begun to tackle these goals by taking the London Honors class, and it has proved to be beneficial in making me more aware of the culture and history of London.

As an astronomy major, Original Inquiry is one of the most important things to my education.  Original inquiry into the problems of my field is the best way to learn the scientific method and gain a deeper understanding of the physics that govern the universe.  I plan on fostering relationships with the physics and astronomy faculty in hopes of earning research positions as soon as possible to increase my understanding of the field.  I also plan on applying for research internships throughout my college career.

While I am majoring in Astronomy and Astrophysics, I have a deep passion for learning in all subjects.  I am as excited to take upper level physics classes as I am to take a course in African politics.  Academic Enrichment is an important part of all education.  By extending yourself beyond the classes for your major, you become a better student, scholar, and person on the whole.  I look forward to being able to extending my education in astronomy and physics outside the mandatory classes by taking more specialized and challenging courses.  I also look forward to being able to engage my love for the humanities through history, literature, and art GE courses.

Learning to be an effective leader is one of the most important things that one can learn in college, and in life.  Being a leader is the best way to ensure that one is successful in their field and will make an impact on those around them.  I have had leadership experience in the past, and I’m excited to explore the opportunities that college will bring for developing those skills.  I have already become an officer in the College Democrats at Ohio State, as well as working with the OSU Planetarium.  I hope that these opportunities, and others I will soon encounter, will continue provide me the platform to become an effective leader.

Service to others has long been a large part of my life.  From going far above and beyond the necessary community service hours required by high school and spending countless hours volunteering at observatories and food banks, I have prided myself on service to others.  I continue to be involved in astronomical outreach to the public through star parties and working with the planetarium, and I have participated in some of the community days of service that the University sponsors.  I plan the keep service to others as a forefront of my actions throughout my time at OSU.
