In general, I feel that this year has gone very well for me. I have taken challenging classes, gotten involved in research that I love, and taken steps to explore possible career options. I feel that I am on a great track to be prepared for graduate school and life after graduation. Below is a reflection on some of the goals that I had early in my freshman year, that I have either begun to accomplish or am still working on.
I plan to achieve this goal by studying abroad for a semester. My current plan is to participate in a neuroscience study abroad program in Copenhagen, Denmark. This will allow me to stay up-to-date with my neuroscience classes while still having the opportunity to experience a different culture and to gain different perspectives in my field. Furthermore, I would love the opportunity to travel to a Spanish-speaking country in some capacity (be it academic, service, etc.) in order to supplement my Spanish minor if time and money allow.
In order to achieve this goal, I am participating in undergraduate research in the Cognitive Development Lab in the Psychology department, under Dr. Sloutsky. In this lab, I run experiments that test general cognition, attention, memory, and categorization of children in a longitudinal format, so we will have the opportunity to see how these topics change as the children age. My goal is to eventually take on an independent research project within this lab, or under the supervision of a neuropsychologist at the Ohio State Medical Center with whom I work, in order to gain experience with coming up with and attempting to answer my own scientific questions.
As an honors student, academic enrichment is most likely the easiest goal to achieve because it is built into my requirements. I will be taking honors classes for most of my general education requirements, as well as multiple upper-level classes for my major and minors. These classes will challenge me so I will get the most out of my education during my time at Ohio State and hopefully become a more well-rounded student and thinker. I would also like to participate in academically-enriching opportunities outside the classroom, such as internships and seminars.
I have begun the path of developing my leadership skills by taking the initiative in seeking out research positions, and working independently within these positions. I hope to eventually turn this into a true leadership position by organizing and carrying out my own research project, as mentioned above. Furthermore, I am interested in becoming a Neuroscience Ambassador, which would be a great way to combine leadership and my area of study
The most important part of my service goal is finding a way to balance service and academics, since both are so important to me. I am already participating in ongoing service projects that I am very passionate about, such as sponsorship of a child in Rwanda through Compassion International, which I have been doing since I was 12 years old. Therefore, the largest part of my service goal is to continue dedicating my time to this and other projects. I would also love to go on a mission trip during college if possible.
