Sophomore Year Reflection on G. O. A. L. S.

Global Awareness

One way I strive to achieve global awareness is carefully considering the courses I take and how they will help me develop as a global citizen. For example, I have taken a few WGSS classes that expand my world view and help me understand life and culture in different areas of the world. Another way I am expanding my global awareness is by studying abroad. In May 2018 I will travel to Ireland with the Department of English, which will be my first trip abroad. This trip will help me expand my global perspective by allowing me to experience another culture first hand. As I continue my studies at OSU, I plan to continue taking courses to advance my understanding of the world around me. I would also like to become more involved in cultural activities such as Taste of OSU or attending performances by different cultural dance groups.

Original Inquiry

As and English major, I have taken several classes that have challenged me to create original work. One of my favorites has been Digital Media Composition, in which I learned how to use programs such as Photoshop and Audacity to create my own media projects. I would like to continue using these skills to create media not only for my coursework but for my personal life and eventually my professional life. I have also completed several in-depth research projects in my courses, including a poster presentation on Early Modern women writers and a critical examination of the roots of White Supremacy in medieval literature ad tradition. In the future, I would like to expand my research beyond the realm of the classroom.

Academic Enrichment

Even before entering college, I have always been committed to academic enrichment. I am committed to the Honors program because it allows me to challenge myself to the fullest extent while taking enjoyable coursework. I chose my major, English with a focus on Professional Writing, Rhetoric, and Literacy, because it will help prepare me for my future career (I am currently interested in entering the field of Arts Administration). The English program I have chosen is not only interesting to me but will help develop my writing, creative thinking, and content production skills. I chose my minor, General Psychology, again not only because it interests me but because the skills I learn will help me succeed in the world post-graduation. I selected my GE courses based on creating a well-rounded, challenging program of study. My major, minor, and GE selections demonstrate my commitment to excellence by highlighting my desire to take advanced coursework of varying topics, so that I will graduate with a well-rounded, developed field of knowledge.

Leadership Development

For my whole college career, I have been an active member of the University Band. Recently, another wind ensemble became an official student organization and I would like to lead the efforts to register UBand as an official organization as well.  I am also pursuing internship opportunities that will allow me to develop my professional leadership skills which will be useful when I make the transition to full-time employment.

Service Engagement

I have been a volunteer at the Ohio State Day of Service and I would like to continue this tradition. I would also like to participate in the MLK day of service in the future. I am in the process of selecting a Buck-I-SERVE trip for a future semester so that I may expand the communities I am involved with.

G. O. A. L. S.

Global Awareness: Global awareness is a very important facet of the well-rounded student. In order to develop global awareness, I will take courses that focus on global studies and diversity issues. My Spanish minor will allow me to take classes that focus on Central and South America, so I will gain knowledge about they way other parts of the world work. I will also take classes that focus on diversity issues for my WGSS major, which will develop my understanding of not only Unites States issues, but global issues as well. I am also interested in potentially studying abroad to gain experience outside the classroom.

Original Inquiry: To achieve the goal of original inquiry, I plan to participate in undergraduate research during my time here at OSU. I would like to start out assisting a professor with their research, and eventually conduct my own. I am particularly interested in doing research associated with my WGSS major, regarding social issues that I am passionate about.

Academic Enrichment: I will use my Academic Plan (and eventually my Honors Contract) to my advantage by crafting a personalized plan of study that will allow me to fulfill all my requirements as well as my personal interests. I chose to major in English because not only do I enjoy creative writing, but professional and business writing as well. I plan to specialize in Writing, Rhetoric, and Literacy because I enjoy studying and learning about different styles of writing and communication. I chose to double major in Women’s, Gender, and Sexuality Studies because I am very passionate about social justice issues and I want to affect change in society. I also chose to minor in Spanish because I believe it is useful to be able to communicate in another language, and I will also take courses to study different parts of the world. I am very excited about my personal plan of study because I believe it will prepare me to do the sort of work and community involvement I want to do after graduation.

Leadership Development: I am currently a member of Body Sense at OSU and eventually I hope to be in a leadership role. Additionally, I want to pursue summer internship opportunities that will allow me to gain leadership experience as well as workplace experience. As an Office of Diversity and Inclusion Scholar, I can participate in leadership opportunities and even take courses focused on developing my leadership skills.

Service Engagement: My first weekend at OSU, I participated in a service event that sent me to work at a local food bank. For the rest of my time here as a student, I want to continue participating in these sorts of events to serve my community. I am also interested in participating in Buck-I-SERV at some point during my college career to gain more volunteer experience and participate in life-changing experiences.
