My “G.O.A.LS.”

Global Awareness

Ohio State University has given me the opportunity to be involved in programs that have helped increases my passion and knowledge of global awareness. The first is G.E.M at KIPP Columbus through the department of social change. I have had the ability to help mentor the 4th, 5th and 6th grade students at KIP Columbus, and this has given me a global perspective by allowing me to have a hands on experience on what is happening in the school system, to young students in Columbus, and how issues are being dealt with and prevented. The second is Student for Education Reform. In this organization I am able to educate the state of Columbus such citizens, students, etc. on what the current education system is doing. I am getting hands on experience with policies and ways policies can be changed within the system.

Original Inquiry

As an undergraduate student, I have become apart of Students for Education Reform and Ohio state Association. These two organizations work to change and implement better policies for the citizens of Ohio.

Academic Enrichment

My future aspirations are to be a juvenile defense lawyer or a politician advocating for education policy reform. This led me to declare my majors as Political Science ad Sociology with a minor in education and a concentration in pre-law. My course work reflects this future goal, and it has helped my to be more knowledge able in what I am going to be doing in the future.

Leadership Development

I am involved in a lot of things here on campus, but of the many being an Office Assistant, KIP Columbus mentor, and Student for Education Reform member, my leadership skills have improved greatly.

Service Engagement

I plan to be involved with KIP Columbus until I graduate, and I applied to be a College Mentor. I hope I am involved in more community service activities, and possible will be able to study abroad.

Opportunities at Ohio State

There are five programs I have been a part of that have definitely given me the opportunity to be successful my freshman year in college. The first is a program called Horizons Atlanta. This is a year-round program for underprivileged students; in this organization, I am a student teacher for kindergarten through eighth grade students. I have been teaching through this program for three years, and it has given me the ability to get to know my students on a deeper level while I help them to grow academically and personally. The second program is CAACURH; A regional leadership conference for residence halls, and I was able to represent The Ohio State Residence Life this fall of 2017. This conference taught me more unique ways to connect with residents on campus. And it allowed me to connect with so many schools across the region. The third program is an organization called People to People, and it allowed me to attend their annual leadership conference the summer of 2015. In addition, I was able to attend Ohio State’s annual Leadership Collaborative Conference in the summer of 2017. This conference allowed me to be able to grow my leadership skills as I connect with different businesses. Lastly, I am a part of the program known as G.E.M where I travel to KIP Columbus on Wednesday to mentor students from second to eighth grade. I love being able to be a constant resource for students whether for school or emotional support; letting students know that they are not alone is a huge importance to me.

From these different programs, I have learned that I am an extremely efficient hard worker and a very interpersonal person. These programs have given me the opportunity to connect with all types of people ranging from different ages and background, and this has definitely given me the ability to be empathetic towards others. I am able to recognize what others need, and provide myself willing as a source for comfort and advice to others.

Symposium Presentation

In English 1110.01, we are asked to create a symposium. A symposium is a five minute video on a topic we have chosen. For my symposium, I decided to create a video on code-switching. The definition of code-switching is when people reflexively or subtly change the way they express themselves towards certain people. I presented this topic because it stemmed from my analytical research paper topic which is the memory of the treatment of African-American women.
