Μεστούσικα — The Mesta dialect of Chios

Mr. John Kellis of Steubenville, Ohio, at 91-years-old the last remaining speaker of the old village dialect of the village of Μεστά (Mesta) on the island of Chios, has undertaken a three-volume work to document the dialect, customs, and history of the village. In cooperation with the Laboratory for Greek Dialectology, on completion this work will be available through the Ohio State University Knowledge Bank.

A brochure describing this important work documenting the history of Μεστά, the people of Μεστά, and the dialect of Μεστά can be found here:  xxxxxxx.

Mr. Kellis has recorded many hours of the text in the Mesta dialect, Μεστούσικα (Mestoúsika); they will be edited by Lab Fellow Dr. Christopher Brown. In their current, unedited form these recordings are available at the SoundCloud page of the Laboratory.
