Description: An Interpretative History of African American Education, 1950 to the Present

EDU P&L 834 is a continuation of the African American educational history course EDU P&L 863. This course has ben designed to provide students with a perspective on African American educational issues and ideas from the 1950 to the present. The goal of the course and the following projects is to move beyond the study of “mainstream” educational movements and ideas, to seek perspective of African American scholars, through their research and writing. One working assumption of the course and these projects is a focus on African American ‘voice’ and ‘representation’ in the education of African Americans. Another assumption is that the meaning of ‘education’ of African Americans can be broadly defined beyond the classroom per se, so that it not only includes pedagogical issues, but also realms of meanings, perspectives, discourse, etc., within the African American community at large. Finally, the perspective of the course articulates the ideological, cultural, political and personal course[s] of action these scholars envision for the African American community at large.
