GOALS

  1. Global Awareness:

What have you done so far to develop your Global Awareness? How do you plan to continue to work toward this goal? (For example, consider course work, study abroad, involvement in cultural organizations or activities, etc.)

Thus far, I have developed my Spanish knowledge by taking up to Spanish 3401, Advanced Grammar. As for the future, I hope to study abroad next May in a Spanish Speaking country. I have currently decided to not minor in Spanish, but if I study abroad, I would be able to complete that minor. I am exploring this option to develop my global awareness. One current activity that I participate in that enhances my global awareness is that I volunteer with ENCompass, a student organization, in a clinic in which I consult with mainly Spanish speakers on their social resource needs.

  1. Original Inquiry:

What experiences have you had so far that have helped you to understand the research or creative process? How do you plan to continue to work toward this goal? (For example, consider research, creative productions or performances, advanced course work, etc.)

Undergraduate research has been a major part of my academic journey. I tentatively began my undergraduate research as a freshman, in which I learned and observed basic laboratory practices. Over the last two semesters of this year, I have changed into a Molecular Genetics lab in which I work on my own personal project related to cytokinesis in yeast cells. I plan to continue this work and hope to graduate with research distinction.

  1. Academic Enrichment:

How does your Honors Contract demonstrate a commitment to the goal of Academic Enrichment? How does your planned curriculum relate to your future aspirations? (Consider, for example, the following questions: Why did you choose the major(s) (and minor(s), if any) you chose? Why did you select the GE courses you have chosen? How do your selections demonstrate a commitment to excellence?)

As a biology major, I am utilizing the flexibility of my major to develop an extensive scientific knowledge that will support me in my future plan for medical school. Throughout my undergraduate career, I will take human physiology, human anatomy which will specifically translate to my future medical career. In addition, I have taken an undergraduate shadowing course through the medical college that enriched my knowledge of medical practice.

  1. Leadership Development:

With which activities are you involved? How does your involvement contribute to your development as a leader? How does your involvement relate to your personal and/or career goals?

On campus, I am involved in ENCompass, a public health organization, the Chimes Junior Honorary, the Honors Collegium, and Kappa Alpha Theta. Over the past year, I have served as the treasurer of ENCompass, and I was recently elected as Co-President. As Co-President, I am responsible for leading my fellow club members toward our organizational goals. In addition, I volunteer at the Emergency Department of Grant Hospital. This also tests my leadership capacity because I help supervise family member contact with patients. This is a high stress situation for family members, and I have learned a lot about professionality and leadership from this role.

  1. Service Engagement:

List the service-oriented activities with which you have been involved (both ongoing and short-term commitments). How do you plan to continue to engage with the community?

Since I began at Ohio State, I have been involved with ENCompass. I have volunteered weekly with this organization for the past two years. We volunteer at various places around the community and recommend social resources, such as food pantries, free clinics, rental assistance, etc., to community members. In addition, I volunteer weekly in the Emergency Department of Grant Hospital. Last summer, I volunteered in Bethesda North Hospital as well as in Heartland Hospice. I plan to continue both the ENCompass and Grant Hospital Volunteering throughout my time at Ohio State. While right now the main resources that I have to share are my time and my access to social resources, as I continue my education and begin to have medical knowledge I will be able to volunteer my time in free clinics.
