This is a screenshot of me (top right) and Renee (middle) during our Zoom interview.

I met Renee Austin during one of our first all-PSL program zoom calls. In the original email that she and my other mentor, Clara Hach, sent me and my fellow mentees, her bio read “She (Renee) is a third-year Moving Image Production major. Renee likes watching movies, driving buses, and hiking.” After my recent interview with Renee, I am lucky to say I have been able to pick her brain and get to know her better as the driven and passionate mentor that I can look up to. Of course, when she is asked questions like “What’s your major?” or “Where are you from?”, Renee, like most students, is always prepared to rattle off her answers. However, when asked what her secret talent was, Renee let me in on the fact that she knows how to play bass, a fact in which we both considered to be an impressive skill to pull out of her back pocket. Your first instinct might tell you that, being a small-town girl (Renee is from Marietta, OH. A small town in Southwest Ohio that happens to be the oldest city in Ohio), Renee is still getting acquainted with some aspects of living in a big city, like finding her way around or taking public transportation, but you would be wrong. Not only does Renee take the buses, but she drives them too. One of her proudest accomplishments so far at Ohio State is receiving her CDL or Commercial Driver’s License. She began working for the COTA (Central Ohio Transit Authority) bus system during the first semester of her sophomore year, starting as a service member cleaning the buses at the end of each night. After about four months of training, she was able to start driving buses around campus. Her recent promotion to the supervisor of the service crew goes to show how Renee’s hard work and dedication to her commitments lead to her success in many areas. Aside from driving buses and being a member of PSL, Renee is a proud member of the Parks and Rec. club here at Ohio State. She explained to me that she thinks the club originally started as a fan club for the show Parks and Rec. but has since turned into an actual outdoors club. Renee is still very close with some of her peers in her PSL class and is good friends with my other PSL mentor Clara. Apart from them having PSL in common, they both also have never broken a bone. Renee’s fondest PSL memory is when the program held an election watch party in the law school building. Although she doesn’t remember which election they were watching, she remarked on the community aspect and irony of such a large group of her peers watching an election on a big screen as if it were an intense football game. As Renee let me in on some of her favorite memories and experiences from her time at OSU, she also left me with a piece of advice. To freshman, Renee suggests, “The biggest thing, especially this year, it’s obviously a little bit difficult this year, is just getting out and experiencing new things.” Some would argue that being from Ohio, Renee was born a Buckeye, but now, she is a true Buckeye through and through. There’s just one contradiction, her favorite color is blue.

About Me

My name is Angelina Globokar and I am a student majoring in Journalism on a Pre-law track at The Ohio State University. My future academic plans at Ohio State include pursuing a minor in French. I am also interested in diversifying my language skills to include Spanish and possibly another language. During my time here at Ohio State, I hope to get an internship for a major news company as well as work as a reporter for The Lantern. I value the progression of my skills in organization, leadership, public speaking, and problem-solving as they contribute to my academic development. In high school, I was the President of the Speech and Debate team, President of Film Club, Student body Vice President, a Varsity Athlete, a member of the Dance Team, and a College-Credit-Plus student. I was also a member and student leader for two academies within my high school called The Jackson School for the Arts (JSA) and The Jackson Academy of Global Studies (JAGS). As my capstone project for JAGS, I taught French to elementary school students and presented my research on the benefits of early childhood language education. One of my most transformational experiences from high school was when I traveled to Eastern Europe with both academies. I documented my experiences through a video diary and was able to share this with incoming academy members as well as parents and teachers in my community. Earlier in my high school career, when my community was experiencing drastic spikes in dangerous mental health, I was able to rally the students of my class in JSA to create an anti-bullying video.  I directed, filmed, and produced this project in order to spread awareness about anti-bullying and suicide prevention. I was extremely proud to make this video and be apart of this movement. My video was shown at the annual arts extravaganza fundraiser for JSA, an event that yearly draws in thousands of community members and families. After closing this chapter of my life,  I can look back gratefully at the opportunities I was afforded and I am excited to start writing my next chapter at Ohio State. Although I am still getting acquainted with life at Ohio State, I am currently involved in the Politics, Society, and Law Scholars Program and the Land Grant Opportunity Scholars Program. As a twin, I have always struggled to figure out and be recognized for my individuality, however, I am excited to make my unique mark on Ohio State during my time here. I look forward to applying myself to the many opportunities that Ohio State will provide for me and I am certain that my strong work ethic will push me to make the impact I would like to have on my new community.

G.O.A.L.S.

During my time here at Ohio State, I hope to apply myself however possible in order to serve the community and strengthen my education. I hope to study abroad during my junior year of college and potentially pursue a double-major in French. This would align with the Honors and Scholars goal of Global awareness because it would diversify my education and allow me to grow as a global citizen. I also hope to have a job as a reporter for The Lantern which would align with the original inquiry goal because I would be conducting my own research and being able to improve my skills as a journalist. I also hope to get an internship with a major news company or PR firm which would align with the goal of academic enrichment. I am also currently running for my dorm’s community council and I think this would be a great way to meet the service engagement goal because it would allow me to serve my peers and fellow residents. This would also align with leadership development as it would allow me to represent my fellow residents and work with fellow council members to address the concerns of residents and promote an inclusive and diverse community within my dorm.
