January 25th, 2016
Location: Faculty Club
Guest Speakers:

  • Ms. Vickie “Yiqi” Chen, Founder of Global Leadership Initiative
  • Mr. Tim Sword, President of Greater Columbus Sister Cities International
  • Mr. Ryan Radebaugh, Program Coordinator for Global Engagement, Office of International Affairs
  • Ms. Renée Bishai, Program Coordinator for Global Engagement, Office of International Affairs

This past week, we were able to host our first monthly dinner of the semester. It was a very relaxed night, where each of our members had the opportunity to catch up with each other and share with the guest speakers. The night followed with great food hosted by the Faculty Club.

A very exciting topic for GLI this semester is our 5 groups planning 5 Sister City events. The GLI Cohort members have been working very diligently in planning these events to celebrate Columbus’ sister city relationships with Curitiba, Ahmedabad, Accra, Herzliya, and Seville. These events will highlight the unique cultures of each city and what they represent. Tonight, each group had the opportunity to speak in front of our cohort and guests, and talk about their progress in planning each individual event. Be on the lookout for more information regarding these events over the next few weeks!

Below are photos highlighting our monthly dinner:

Week 12: GLI Weekly Meeting

Galal Walker

Galal Walker with the GLI Cohort

November 9th, 2015
Guest Speaker:
Galal Walker, Director of National East Asian Languages Resource Center at OSU

This past week, we had the honor of welcoming Dr. Galal Walker to come speak to our GLI 2015-2016 Cohort Members. Dr. Walker came and spoke to our cohort members 2 years ago, and we had the exciting opportunity to bring him back this year. His knowledge and passion in the field of cultural lenses was very insightful to our members, giving them applicable contexts on the topic of cultural awareness.  A clear message was conveyed, “Don’t tell other people’s story, and don’t let other people tell your story.”

We want to thank Dr. Walker for his time and consideration of speaking to our cohort!

Last week, we had the privilege of welcoming Reese Neader to speak to our GLI 2015-2016 Cohort Members. Reese’s passion in strengthening the business community in Columbus is what compelled him to start Forge Columbus. Reese understands the value of bringing our entire community together in supporting these local entrepreneurs, and he continues to strive for that vision in recognizing Columbus, OH as the #1 Opportunity City in the U.S.

We want to thank Reese for bringing his expertise into our meeting!

Week 10: GLI Monthly Dinner

GLI October Monthly Dinner

GLI October Monthly Dinner

October 26th, 2015
Location: Faculty Club
Guest Speakers:

  • Mr. Tim Sword, President of Greater Columbus Sister Cities International
  • Mr. Jeremy Leifel, Senior Sales Manager for Greater Columbus Sports Commission
  • Ms. Sara Hall, Attorney, Gnoesis Group, Columbus International Program Board Member

Week 10: For GLI’s second monthly dinner, we had the pleasure of welcoming the Young Professional Delegation that recently went to Genoa/Milan, Italy in the month of October. Tim Sword, Jeremy Leifel, and Sara Hall all shared their personal experiences and stories of traveling to Italy. The trip was not only a cultural shock to them, but it was also a valuable lesson that taught them the importance of cultural exchange. Story telling is very powerful, and we are very fortunate to have heard these stories from young professionals within our community. From their stories, it is clear that traveling to a foreign country is an invaluable experience, an experience of a life time that can change an entire person’s view and perspective on this world.

Thank you to the guest speakers for bringing back insights from their trip and sharing that with us. We hope these stories inspires and motivates everyone to travel in the future, get out of their comfort zone, and explore the global world that we live in today!
