Learning how to communicate (especially in college) through online settings is an important tool to have in your toolbox. Establishing a set of standards on how people communicate with each other online is called netiquette (slide 3). Having netiquette is extremely important in “protecting your reputation” says Julie Spira a Netiquette Expert and CEO. Along with this, learning how to effectively communicate is extremely crucial in a college setting. You don’t have your parents advocating/communicating for you so learning how to do that yourself is key. Some tips to follow for communicating online are being specific and to the point, present your best self, avoid sarcasm or slang, proper grammar, etc. Also, with technology playing a huge factor in colleges today, you are more than likely going to be using online communicating skills whether that’s for discussion posts, emails, exams, quizzes, everyday assignments, essays, etc. The most useful thing I learned in this module are the specifics on how to write a professional academic email. The elements that should be included are a subject line, greeting, context for your message, closing and your full name. Although I have sent many emails to professors already, getting a refresher on how/what to do and to even make my emails better is always helpful. Some other tips for writing a professional email are proofreading your message, writing in complete sentences, and possibly mention if you have already checked the syllabus or class page (slide 8). Communicating online may not seem like an important tool to have but trust me in college it is something you are going to be doing everyday so practicing good habits now will create even better habits for the future.
