Week 5/8-5/9

My last week at Gladden was cut short due to my grandpas funeral. However, my last two days I was very busy finishing last minute projects. I made a recipe for my last food demo, and made a handout to give during my organic v. non-organic portion of my food demonstration. On my last day, I completed the food demo and presentation on organic v. non-organic. Many people had questions that I was able to answer and it was ht most engaged my audience has ever been. On my last day we were also able to finally complete the video project and upload it to youtube. Kim was extremely happy with how the video turned out and it will be used from now on to teach volunteers everything they need to know about the pantry. I am extremely happy with how this internship has gone and I feel like I have learned a great deal of knowledge to help me in my professional career. I have become more acquainted with Adobe Illustrator, Photoshop, Lightroom, and Premiere Pro. I was able to practice public speaking skills and create mini lessons about agriculture, and I was able to learn about the work force and what I could potentially be doing a a career. I am extremely thankful for my time at the pantry.

Week 4/30-5/4

This week at the Gladden Food Pantry, I finished my flyer and hung the around the pantry and put them in the main entrance. I also assisted with Pantry Trak checking clients in, inputing new data,  and collecting CSFP applications. I also presented another food demo and taught the clients how to make the meal at home, good ingredient substitutes, and the nutrition information which including going in depth as to how each individual ingredient is good for your body. Later in the week I completed editing the video in Premiere Pro and added the audio voice over in the background. Mushroom Pork Chops

Week 4/23-4/27

This week at the Gladden Food Pantry, I assisted with various office tasks which included painting on the main lobby. I also finalized the audio script for the video project with my supervisor Kim, it showcases not only the pantry, but what Gladden Community House does as well. I also worked on new recipes to hang in the back of the warehouse for clients to grab as they shop and I worked on my next food demonstration. On Wednesday, I presented the food demonstration to clients, did a taste testing, and then gave a presentation on GMOs. In the GMO presentation I included what GMO stands for, what makes food GMOs, the testing done on GMO products.   This week, I also recorded audio for our video project and took photos outside the Gladden Food Pantry and Gladden Community House to include in the video as well. I also began working on a flyer to hang around the pantry, talking about our food demos, Fb page and upcoming produce giveaways!GMO notes

Week 4/16-4/20

This week at the Gladden Food Pantry, it was Volunteer Appreciation Week, we were able to take a break from some of our other activities and celebrate some. I took photos of volunteers, found out a little bit about them, edited the photos in LightRom and then made Facebook posts for the Gladden Community House Facebook page. Wednesday, we celebrated volunteers with a volunteer lunch, and later that day I searched through the food demo archives for inspiration because it can be hard to make meals with the food that is just found in the pantry.

Later in the week, I continued with the volunteer Facebook posts, and editing the photos and captioning them but  I also searched the internet for a grant for the pantry so they can purchase an electric pallet jack. I also contacted various churches in Franklinton asking they would be able to donate personal hygiene items to the pantry. Friday was spent preparing for the painting that will be taking place on Monday. I helped move furniture, take down flyers, and even helped pick the paint color.

It was a great week at Gladden.

Week 4/9-4/13

This week, we continued to work on our video project. iMovie was no cooperative, and we decided to switch the rest of the production to Adobe Premiere Pro. This week was spent learning the basics of Premiere Pro and how to add text slides and all the added effects with those. I also completed a food demonstration this week, I made crockpot lasagna soup and I also taught 5 ways to use baking soda. The turnout for this demo was huge and I was able to show many people how to make nutritious meals with the food they find in the pantry. For the food demos, I try to make something that all the ingredients are found in the pantry, I do this to show that even though these people are getting their food here, it is still nutritious and they are making healthy meals for their family. I also incorporated 5 ways to use baking soda, because baking soda is something we get often in the pantry, and many people do not know all the uses for it.

The rest of the week was spent working on my next food demonstration, in which I will talk about GMO food v. Non-GMO food. I also added all the photos into Premiere Pro for the video, assisted with paperwork for new volunteers, and began looking up recipes for the next food demo.Crockpot Lasagna Soup 5 Uses for Baking Soda

Week 4/2- 4/6

This week at Gladden, I assisted Kim with major office work. We sorted through all the volunteer forms and liability waivers and organized them all in an excel file. I hadn’t worked with excel in quite some time so it’s always good to revisit those skills. This week, I was also able to work on our video project which should be coming together by next week. Wednesday was the most exciting day this week. Kim and I attended the Food Access meeting which was hosted by Lower Lights this year. Several non-profits from Columbus attended including, Lower Lights, Gladden, Mt. Carmel, Mid-Ohio, several homeless organizations and many more. We all were able to say what our organization is doing to fight hunger and improve the community. We were then able to tour the Jubilee market and cafe which is going to be a part of Lower Lights. It was an awesome experience and amazing to see what all the organizations are doing for the community.

3/26-3/30

This week, I was not at the Pantry on Friday because we were closed for Good Friday, however, Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday I worked on several different projects. I worked on my next food demonstration and made a recipe for that, and I decided to add a second portion to my food demonstration and talk about 5 ways to use baking soda. The pantry clients are in the poverty level, so whatever I can teach them to save money and how to use items from the pantry effectively is helping significantly. I also worked on the video and started adding photos and text portions to the video and I also talked with clients about the previous recipe I created and what is beneficial to them about the food they’re consuming. Slow Cooker Golden Chicken-1hx530s

Week 3/19-3/23

This week at the Gladden Food Pantry, we dove deeper into our video project. The video is going to be a video that Kim (my supervisor) will show to new volunteers and it will provide volunteers with an in depth look at what’s going on at the pantry, and other way to get involved. This week was a great week for photos because we got huge shipments of both food and produce this week, and I was able to practice my photography skills in odd lighting.

I also worked on editing the photos and cropping them, and we began recording the audio portion of the video. I also created a grayscale version of the logo and made additional edits.

I also began research for my next food demonstration, and I helped Kim find grants for the food pantry to apply for.

Week 3/5-3/9

This week at the Gladden Food Pantry, I began my internship and learned how to use their online pantry tracking system called “Pantry Track”. This online systems allows them to keep track of all the clients that come through the pantry and easily update their address and the number of people in the household. This also keeps track of the last time families have come through the pantry and if they are allowed to shop for their 3 day choice pantry, or if they are only allowed to get produce.

I also began designing a logo for the pantry. Gladden Food Pantry is a part of Gladden Community House, so we designed a couple logos, some of which had their own design elements and no relation to Gladden Community House, and then we designed logos that incorporated the Community House logo.

By the end of the week we had finalized the logo we were aiming for and it will be featured on flyers and posters in the upcoming weeks as well as on the Facebook page we will be updating soon. Circle Logo Logo Ideas Final Logo Wheat Logo

Week 3/12-3/16

Although it was spring break, I still attended the internship twice this week on Wednesday and Friday. My absence was discussed with my supervisor prior to spring break and approved.

On Wednesday, I had a lot of fun at my internship because I was able to conduct a food demonstration. It was very cold outside on Wednesday so I was only able to present to three people but I made chicken and egg noodles in a crockpot and then I was able to teach the audience all about how simple the recipe is, how all the ingredients can be found in the pantry and how nutritious the food is. Although I only presented to three people, I sat up front the rest of the day and greeted people when they came in and I was able to teach them as well.

Friday, we started a new project which is making a video for new volunteers to watch before they get started in the pantry. We bang taking photos of everything we want to include in the video and made a script for the recording on Monday.Slow Cooker Golden Chicken
