My First Semester at OSU

My first semester at OSU was definitely one for the books. I made so many amazing friends and made so many memories that I’ll keep with me for the rest of my life. It was also much more manageable than I had initially thought college would have been. Having so much free time to focus on myself and my school work was a very good change from high school that I hadn’t expected. I also thought I would have missed home more than I do. Going back for break was fun and I loved it, but I definitely feel like Columbus is where I belong for now. Something I’ll have to change from first semester to second semester will be how often I go out to the gym. I’ve been very lame about it, mostly because I think I was so worried about my grades and making friends that I didn’t want to go, but I think I’ll be able to handle it much better next semester and drive myself to go. I also ended up loving chemistry, which I thought would be the class that gave me the most struggles. My TA was wonderful and extremely helpful and my professor was hilarious and made every lecture interesting and engaging. All that I have to worry about now is my nursing application and the early mornings I’ll have next semester. If next semester is anything like this semester though I think I’ll do just fine.

My First Week at OSU

My first week at Ohio State was much different than what I thought it would be. It all started with move in day. My expectations for move in day were much different than how it ended up going. I expected my family to be upset, which in a way they were, but the way they expressed their feelings was all much different than I thought it would be. My father was just angry, he was upset with everything everyone said, especially my mother, and was in the most horrible mood. My mom on the other hand acted exactly like I thought she would. She tried to be peppy and talk the whole trip, which just bothered him more and made the car ride a bit awkward. I also expected some tears, which may be self-centered to say, but I really did expect to cry and have them cry with me, but instead we went to an early dinner and they dropped me back off at my dorm and that was it. My mom was the only one to get out of the car and hug me goodbye, which was also very different from my expectations.
Past move in day, my experience went much better than I had originally thought. I was incredibly nervous about meeting people and being able to make new friends because most of the time I feel like I’m not too great at that particular skill, but it was surprisingly easy to make new friends and build new relationships. I also hadn’t expected to make old friendships better and feel new again, which I have done throughout my first week. Another thing I didn’t expect was to fall apart with one of my closest friends. I knew there wasn’t going to be as much contact as before but I didn’t expect to feel like I never talk to them. I even visited them on my first weekend since they go to a satellite campus of OSU but it was much more different than I expected. It’s definitely been an eye opening kind of week. I’ve figured out who some of my closest friends are going to be throughout this year and the next couple of years and I’ve also slowly gotten closer to new people.
Class wise, I was initially very nervous for my chemistry class and thought that it would be my toughest class and I still have somewhat the same impression, except I don’t believe it will be as hard as I first thought. It will definitely be my most pressing class, but I don’t think it will be as hard as I thought. My professor is very kind and intriguing and I am understanding most of the lessons and recitations. I think my other classes are going to be just as enjoyable as my chemistry class is. My biology professor is very kind and I can tell that I will enjoy her class thoroughly. Sociology will probably be the class that I’ll need to pay the most attention in. Since it’s just a lecture and reading I feel as though that will be the class that I struggle most with.
In summary, my week went much more different than I first thought, but mostly in a positive manner. I’m very excited for the first football game and all of the arts activities and the free movies every Wednesday. I think I’m really going to enjoy this campus once I figure out how to get myself out there more.
