Year in Review

  1. What have you done so far to develop your Global Awareness? How do you plan to continue to work toward this goal? (For example, consider some course work, study abroad, involvement in cultural organizations or activities, etc.)                                                                                                          In order to develop my global awareness, I completed an eight week study abroad program in Dresden, Germany during the summer of 2017. I also declared a German major this year and am currently taking course work that relates to German language and culture (for example, German 3602: German for the Professions 1). I would like to study abroad again if possible, and am applying to a Spring Break 2019 trip to Taiwan as a STEP project. In addition to everything previously mentioned, I have taken language courses and a literature course from the Korean department. I plan to continue taking course work related to global awareness, especially related to German language and culture.
  2. What experiences have you had so far that helped you to understand the research or creative process? How do you plan to continue to work toward this goal? (For example, consider research, creative productions or performances, advanced course work, etc.)                                                           I was a research assistant on a Psycho-linguistic experiment under Dr. Kiwako Ito for the 2016-2017 school year. The project was conducted at COSI in the language pod. I am currently in a linguistics Research seminar where all students are conducting their own research projects. My project will use corpus data to look for regional differences in the usage of the subjunctive 2 form in German. In terms of creative performance/production, I have been a member of the OSU women’s glee club since august 2016 and intend to remain a member until graduation. Additionally, I completed a theater practicum in the spring of 2018 in the costume department and learned, among other things, the basics of sewing.
  3. How does your honors contract demonstrate a commitment to the goal of Academic Enrichment? How does your planned curriculum relate to your future aspirations? (Consider, for example, the following questions: Why did you choose the major(s) (and minor(s), if any) you chose? Why did you select the GE choices you have chosen? How do your selections demonstrate a commitment to excellence?)                                                                                                                                                               I chose my Linguistics major because I have an  interest in the underlying structures of language and the differences and commonalities between languages across the globe, how they have changed over time, and how their speakers use them to interact within their own communities and with the world as a whole. I chose my German major because I wanted to study the language more in depth and work towards greater language fluency and cultural awareness with the ultimate goal of possibly working in a German speaking country in the future. The courses I have taken in the past and plan to take in the future demonstrate a commitment to excellence in the level of the course work, the breadth of subjects covered in my General Education plan and the depth of the courses taken for each of my majors.
  4. With which activities are you involved? How does your involvement contribute to your development as a leader? How does your involvement relate to your personal and/or career goals?   I am involved in two main activities, the first being the OSU women’s glee club. My involvement in the club has allowed me to further develop my musical skills and take a more active leadership role in the organization. Last year I was a member of the club’s affairs committee and helped plan different social activities for club members, and this year I am a member of the design committee and help with bulletin board updating, club social media, and conducting uniform checks on members before performances. The second activity in which I am involved is the club Buckeye Tang Soo Do, which is a traditional Korean martial arts club. Last year I was the club president and served as the club’s student leader and point of contact between the school administration and our club as a whole. This year I am the vice president of the club and maintain most of my old duties, such as checking the club email, submitting facility requests and travel forms, and attending occasional president meeting in the club president’s stead. I am also the club risk manager, meaning that I have been certified in CPR and First Aid and am responsible for the club med kit, accident reports, and club safety as a whole. My involvement in this club is helping me work toward my future goal of achieving a black belt and is helping me set up future relationships, because the association to which the club belongs has many studios in Germany and other European countries.
  5. List the service-oriented activities with which you have been involved (both ongoing and short-term commitments). How do you plan to continue to engage with the community?                                The main service activity I have completed is a  Buck-I-Serv trip completed during spring break of 2018 to volunteer for the Cherokee nation in Oklahoma. I am currently signed up to complete another service trip during the upcoming winter break, this time to Tennessee to volunteer in national forests and with the Northern Cherokee Band. In addition to these activities, I was on a Buckeyethon team last year and raised money for children at the Nationwide children’s hospital. The martial arts club I am in, Buckeye Tang Soo Do, completes community service projects several times a year. Last school year, I participated in a club sponsored self-defense clinic for dorm students, a toys for tots drive, and a park clean-up activity. I plan to complete more community service projects in the community with the club in the future and complete as many Buck-I-Serv trips as possible before graduation.
