Sophomore Year in Review

My second year started off strong, coming off of a good summer. However later in the fall I got multiple colds, coughs, and sinus infections that made school difficult. After recovering over winter break the spring semester started off well and continued to go great. I posted my highest GPA yet and stayed healthy. Additionally I started to coach for our club swim team, as well as compete. While we didn’t win nationals like the previous year, I personally did well. I placed 2nd in the 400 IM again, 2nd in the 100 breast, and 4th in the 200 IM. I’m looking forward to spending my summer in California working for Abbott’s Vascular division.

Reflection on 2016-2017 Goals

As the 2016-2017 school year recently ended, now seems like a good time to reflect back on the goals I had for the academic year. I had said my goals were twofold. I had said that “My goals for the 2016-2017 school year were to be admitted to the major of my choice and to broaden my cultural understanding.”

As I had predicted I wasn’t admitted to the ME major. I will be reapplying in the fall of 2017, however this goal has gotten more murky since I am no longer sure of what my top choice of major is. I enjoy ME, but I also find electrical engineering fascinating, the aerospace industry to be exciting, and industrial systems engineering to be the most business friendly. As a result I’m not sure what major I will pursue, and my work experience has taught me that there are many paths to the career I want. While this makes it a bit more difficult to plan the future I’m still intent on pursuing engineering.

My second goal was to broaden my cultural understanding of the US and abroad. I have been keeping up with world news in an effort to be connected. Additionally as part of my STEP signature project, I will be traveling abroad at the end of the spring 2018. I am incredibly excited for the opportunity to travel to Wales to study the architecture of the ancient castles and cathedrals there. This goal is ongoing and long term and I’m looking forward to pursuing it.

Student Housing Lighting Case Study

For this class project a group and I worked together on a case study of the economic viability of lighting project by The Ohio State University’s Housing Department. We looked at the current lighting system and two new lighting options. Using the time value of money various factors were looked at to determine the ROI of the project. These factors included the up front costs, rebates, energy savings and maintenance, among others. Attached is the brief, and our analysis*.

Freshman Year in Review

My freshman year started off strong in the fall semester. Living in my scholars community with students who were in the same classes as me really helped me settle in. Additionally I found a couple of clubs I really enjoyed: Formula Buckeye and Club swimming. These helped me balance school and extracurricular’s. Formula Buckeye is an engineering club that builds a race car from scratch every year to compete in formula SAE. Club swimming is part of OSU rec sports and hosts and travels to swim meets across the country while hosting daily practices. Additionally, while the football season may not have been what we hoped for it was a blast going to games.

Spring semester was more difficult due to some hard classes, but club swimming nationals made it enjoyable. Every year the club team travels to Atlanta Georgia to compete against 1800 swimmers from over 200 teams. I personally swam well, placing 2nd in my 400 IM, 3rd in the 200 IM and 5th in the 100 Br. But our team did even better taking home 1st on the guys side and 2nd on the girls to win the whole meet. I’ll be looking forward to a summer internship with Abbott Laboratories in Virginia, and my sophomore year.

2016-2017 Goals

My goals for the 2016-2017 school year were to be admitted to the major of my choice and to broaden my cultural understanding.

In the fall I will be finishing the requirements to apply to the mechanical engineering major. Unfortunately I am expecting to  repeat a few courses to raise my GPA. Ideally I’ll be admitted in the spring of 2017. While retaking classes is certainly frustrating, pushing back my graduation does give me some more opportunities. The extra semester’s will allow me to pursue a minor, as well as fit in an extra summer of intern experience and maybe even study abroad.

My second goal is to broaden my cultural understanding of the US and abroad. While I am studying a hard science major in school, I would also like to understand more about the world outside of where I live. Ultimately I would like to be able to travel overseas to experience first hand another part of the world. However, a trip like that takes planning so for the near term I will have to settle for reading instead.

Career

Most of my work experience has been with Abbott Laboratories, a Fortune 500 company who’s intern program is ranked #2 in healthcare. I started working for Abbott in the summer of 2015 in Columbus OH. I worked in Global Engineering Services for Abbott Nutrition (which makes products such as Pedialyte, Similac, and Ensure). While there I worked on editing and processing AutoCAD drawings. This enhanced the 3d modeling skills I learned in the PLTW program and gave me my first real world work experience.

My second summer for Abbott was spent in Virginia in the summer of 2016. I worked as a manufacturing intern in the operational excellence team for one of their nutrition plants and east coast distribution center. In this group I primarily worked to start to improve the efficiency of the sites preventative maintenance program. I utilized lean and six sigma philosophies, especially 5s methodology. I also improved some of the tracking tools used to produce safety and productivity metrics. When I returned to school in the fall of 2016 I was hired as a campus ambassador for Abbott to help increase their recruiting presence.

Currently I am working for Abbott in California in their Vascular Division and I am looking forward to the summer ahead. I have enjoyed my time at Abbott and the ability to see new roles in different divisions has been very impactful. Abbott is very focused on using their intern program to develop students, which is a major reason I have kept coming back for multiple summers.

Final GES Presentation

This is my groups final presentation for our Green Engineering Scholars class. We looked into the new technology of graphene sponges and their efficacy as a tool for absorbing natural solvents. The most interesting aspect of graphene sponges is how they can absorb oil (or other chemicals) and leave water behind, making them a potential tool for cleaning up oil and chemical spills in water. Graphene Sponges

About Me

My name is Grayton Giesman and I am a second year student at The Ohio State University. I graduated from Worthington Kilbourne High School with honors in May of 2015. I am currently studying engineering here at Ohio State. Outside of the classroom I coach and compete with the club swim team, which won nationals in 2015. I am also a member of the Formula Buckeye team, which builds a formula SAE race car from scratch every year. For the past three summers I have worked at Abbott Laboratories as an engineering intern in Columbus, Virginia, and California.
