G.O.A.L.S. #2

Although the weather makes me wants to stay inside all day with some hot chocolate and a dozen of blankets, my HES pals, Preston and Axumawite, and I decided to do a little adventuring around Columbus the Saturday of the 24th. Although our break was arguably still short, I made sure to fill it with lots of memories like this. And there’s nothing like some ice cream on an ice-y day like this. We went to the Jeni’s off high street to celebrate the game (of course). The free stickers, cute environment, and free samples made it all the worthwhile. It was a great experience to not only try some funky flavors, but sit down, relax, and talk about whatever was on our minds. It made me realize I haven’t taken that time for myself in awhile and we all plan to do it more often. I wouldn’t mind a trip back for the lavender ice cream anyway. All jokes aside, I’m genuinely grateful to have these people in my life. Humanitarian Engineering Scholars helped me interact with some amazing people who I would’ve missed out on otherwise. This program gave me two friends who I know will always support and care for me in these next years of college and in the future. Humanitarian Engineering has brought not only several friends who I can lean on, but also so many experiences-like and unlike this one- to keep me involved in the community. From volunteering to events such as the Mental Awareness Week Recess, I have felt at home here on campus besides having another home 20 minutes away.

Community Service: Volunteer work is something I have always been involved in and enjoy doing. I have finally gotten back into volunteer work this semester after a long break to focus on schoolwork. Last month, I had the opportunity to volunteer with the organization Habitat for Humanity. I was both excited and nervous for this event as it is very different from the volunteer work I usually do. The most physical volunteering experience for me was at the most carrying around bags of gifts to deliver during the MFS Eid Toy Drive- and that is not saying much. I wasn’t sure how helpful I would be on this trip, but I found this experience really is something that anyone who isn’t afraid to get dirty can do! With our fashionable safety goggles and hard hats, we got right into working on a different job in the house. The supervisor was sure to check in on us and give us clear instructions on what to do. After a long process, I got to help install not one, but two doors on a house being built for a veteran. I can’t wait to attend more community service events where I can really get my hands dirty. I will for sure volunteer with Habitat for Humanity again, but hopefully it is warmer by then!

G.O.A.L.S.

On Thursday, October 26, my HES group and I went on a little adventure to explore more of Columbus together. We decided on going to Fourth Street Bar and Grill to have some good food and a great time! One revelation I had, other than the satisfaction of one of the best veggie burgers I’ve ever tasted, was that college is much more than homework and grades. It is also the experiences I have and will gain here at OSU and the great people I will meet. We all talked about how college has been so far and immediately we jumped into how each class is treating us right now and how worried we are in terms of our major for the next years of college. It wasn’t until our mentor, Paulina, asked us about what’s going on outside of class that we all finally talked about the good here on campus. There are so many opportunities out there and I am so excited to expand myself outside of the classroom again. With community service and extracurricular activities through Design For 90, MSA, and HES, I will do great this here at OSU in not only the classroom, but in the community as well. This was a great experience and it’s always a fun time when we all get together to do homework or hangout. What I like most about experiences like these are the laughs we share together and the bonds we create as a group. I would definitely go back- I heard they have a karaoke night afterall.

Diversity and Inclusion: I like to be involved in groups that promote and celebrate diversity. I went to an Islamic private school up until the fifth grade. Transferring into a private school where everyone wasn’t like me was difficult at times, but it proved to me that my uniqueness is something to be proud of and stand for. I was president of Face2Face, my high school’s diversity club, and I participated in the school’s multicultural fair. I tried to get involved in anything to express my culture, but also to provide a safe, accepting environment for others to do the same. I still remain close to my Islamic and Pakistani community, which helps shape me, but love to get outside of my comfort zone and learn about other cultures. One of my most memorable experiences was Black History Month Assembly. It helped with my public speaking as I got to talk in front of my whole school about something I’m passionate about.

About Me

My name is Hana and I’m currently in the Biological Engineering pre-major, but am interested in the Biological Engineering. I am commuting this year and live in Galena, OH. I like hanging out with friends and reading when I have spare time. My favorite book currently is ‘A Man Called Ove’ but I’m always open to book suggestions! I listen to music almost 24/7 and love finding new songs to listen to. My goal for my future career is to be able to help people one-on-one. Ever since I was young I have loved community service and volunteering to help those who need it the most. I am fortunate enough to have a mother who is very involved in helping others and works for a nonprofit organization called Muslim Family Services that helps with families who are in need. Volunteering and working firsthand with the community was important for me in finding my passion for the future.

In a recent strength-finder quiz, I received the following five words as how to describe me:

– connectedness

– restorative

– intellection

– input

– positivity

I feel sentiment towards these words as they bring light to what I find important and what I try to associate myself with. Anyone who knows me probably won’t believe me when I say this, but I used to be very quiet and awkward around people. Feeling connected to others helps me feel not only like I have people to lean on, but I can be that someone for people to rely on or just someone to talk to. Being the reason for someone’s smile or laugh can turn my entire day around. I also see restoration and intellection as things I hope to achieve for my future.
