Freshman Reflection

During my freshmen year at Ohio State, I have been able to grow academically, spiritually, and socially.

Academically, I was able to understand my strengths and weaknesses in the classroom. This has helped me to gain a greater understanding of the career path I may want to take.

Immediately, I began to get involved with the St. Thomas More Newman Center, attending Mass weekly and becoming a Eucharistic Minister at the Newman Center and at the Wexner Medical Center. My involvement with the Newman Center has been an integral part in continuing a strong relationship with my faith.

Socially, I joined many different clubs and organizations. Health Sciences Scholars helped the transition to be smooth, allowing me to make friends easily, attend information sessions regarding the medical field, and be involved in a mentor/mentee relationship. I also joined Medlife, Wishmakers, and a sorority, Pi Beta Phi. These clubs/organizations have helped me to realize what I value and why.

Despite having to face adversity this freshmen year, I can say that I have grown from the difficulties of a transition to college and the coronavirus pandemic.

Service Engagement

During my first year at Ohio State, I had the opportunity to become involved with Medlife, an organization that provides medical education and development for low-income families everywhere. Through Medlife, I served on the Fundraising Committee, raising money in order to send members of our organization on a medical mission trip.

I also served as a Eucharistic Minister through the St. Thomas More Newman Center on Ohio State’s campus, visiting and providing the Eucharistic to patients at the Wexner Medical Center once a week.

Lastly, I volunteered weekly at the Wexner Medical Center on the Geriatrics Floor helping restock patient supplies, visiting with patients, and preparing admission kits.

Service has been a passion of mine since high school and I am grateful to have continued this passion through my first year of my undergraduate education.

Hello!

Hi! I am Kathleen Gerberry. I am a Health Sciences major on the Pre-Med track from Avon, Ohio. I decided to pursue a Health Sciences major and be on the track for medical school because of my love for the sciences and interest in the medical field. I am hoping to join many different medical related organizations on campus this year. An undergrad goal of mine is to embark on a a medical brigade with the Medlife OSU Chapter. As far as career goals, I am hoping to become a Pediatric Allergist one day, as I enjoy being around children and I think allergy is a fascinating speciality. Some of my hobbies include working out, trying new foods, and traveling.
