7.) Consumer

Once the product has made its way to the consumer, the drug is used to achieve a high. Most users snort the cocaine powder through there nostrils to achieve a quick high. Users can also inject it, ingest it, or rub on their gums to achieve similar results.  Once the consumer has used up their share of the product, they will continue to reach out to their local dealer(s) to continue buying small quantities at a time and the cycle will continue. As the product moves up the supply chain, its value increases at each stop.

 

Impact of Cocaine on User

Cocaine has a great impact on the body of the user as well as a great impact on their social lives. Cocaine affects the body almost immediately after snorting or injecting it. It blocks neurotransmitters in the brain from being reabsorbed, causing a high. According Dr. Eric Nestler (2005) at The University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center, “An initial, short-term effect—a buildup of the neurochemical dopamine—gives rise to euphoria and a desire to take the drug again.”  Users have reported feeling higher levels of awareness and focus, as well as, a feeling of superiority. This high makes the drug very addicting, causing the user to crave more of it.

Social Issue 

Cocaine has had very damaging effects on society for over 100 years.  These problems led governments to put strict laws forbidding use of the drug other than medical use(Effects) The drug has since spread to and affects all levels of society. It affects the user’s family,  workplace, and life in general. Crimes have been greatly associated with the drug. Cocaine has also taken a toll on the U.S. health care system, costing more than 9.9 billion dollars in 1998 alone. (Effects)
