ESEPSY 1359 (8550):
Class 1:
How did the visitor from the OSU Libraries relate to our class?
- Beth Black’s lecture related to the class as she showed us how to find and use the online resources, such as databases, here at Ohio State. This related to class as we are starting to explore what we want to write about for the rest of the semester. To do this research needs to be done which the databases can be used for.
What was interesting from the presentation?
- I thought learning about how to use the OSU library’s resources was interesting as I had not previously known about them.
What strategies from the presentation could you use in this class?
- I know that I will use the data bases to find articles and studies for my research. I will also use Wikipedia to find resources as well.
Topic to write about:
Gun Control (should we allow teachers to have guns in school)
Engineering Ethics (should everyone be forced to live in a city)
Possible interviewees:
For the gun control topic:
- My coach (used to be a school teacher also a 6 time Olympian)
- My old high school teachers
- My current professors
For the engineering ethics topic:
- An acquaintance who works for a civil engineering firm (Turner Construction)
- Current professors (In my 1181 and 1182 class)
Questions to ask:
For the gun control topic:
- What is your current stance on the gun policy in the United States
- Do you think think there should be stricter gun control?
- Should professors/teachers be allowed to keep firearms on themselves if they choose to?
- Do you think allowing teachers to arm them self would be effective in stopping tragedies such as Sandy Hook?
- Do you think it would be a good deterrent to stop criminals?
- If educators were to arm themselves what kind of process should they have to go through to bring weapons to school?
- Should the school hire armed security guards instead of allowing teachers concealed firearms?
- Should schools do both? (Question 6)
- What do you think the initial pubic view will be?
- How do you think the public’s view will change after a few years if a law is passed (Any level of government)?
For the engineering ethics topic:
- What impact have humans had on the world?
- How do you think moving to a very large city impact the individual?
- How to you think life will change (for the better or worse)?
- How do you thing it will impact society?
- Do you think have everyone living in a city will effect economies?
- What about the environment?
- Is it ethical to make everyone live in the city (elaborate)?
- Do you think in the future everyone will live in the city anyways (Cities are becoming more popular)?
- Is it possible innovation can come quicker in a city?
- Do you think there will be more or less jobs if people everyone lives in a city?

Urbanization and the Mass Movement of People to Cities
- The article is shows and explains data trends. It also explains the effect of urbanization and how it it shaping our world.
Class 2:
How could you integrate what Sam Rowe brought to the class into your academic activities?
- I think everything that Sam showed to will be useful during the group project as well as other classes such as engineering. A lot of the Engineering classes do involve team work and I feel that it will be especially useful for communication so we won’t have to meet in person every time and people can be assigned to or pick things that they want to do.
Expert Q&A:
- What is your current stance on the gun policy in the United States
- I agree with the majority of it. People should have the right to own guns.
- Do you think there should be stricter gun control?
- There should be a way to prevent firearms to fall in the hands of the wrong people.
- Should professors/teachers be allowed to keep firearms on themselves if they choose to?
- It is a possibility, should be very carefully determined who, how, and under what conditions.
- Do you think allowing teachers to arm them self would be effective in stopping tragedies such as Sandy Hook?
- It is a possibility. There have been many cases when an armed citizen prevents, or minimizes a tragedy.
- Do you think it would be a good deterrent to stop criminals?
- It is a step in that direction. School shootings happen, because to some extend there is no one to stop a shooter for a long time, there are no armed people.
- If educators were to arm themselves what kind of process should they have to go through to bring weapons to school?
- Extensive training, psychological evaluations, strict conditions for storing the firearms.
- Should the school hire armed security guards instead of allowing teachers concealed firearms?
- Should schools do both? (Question 6)
- Yes, as long as it makes the school safer, not the opposite.
- What do you think the initial public view will be?
- I think there will be a lot pro and against that. And both will be valid.
- How do you think the public’s view will change after a few years if a law is passed (Any level of government)?
- If there were tragedies that were prevented by an armed teacher, probably the public view will lean more towards accepting it.
Thesis Statement:
- Stance
- Teachers should be allowed to have guns in school
- 3 Topics
- Regular citizens with guns have stopped bad guys with guns
- Criminals are less likely to commit a crime when they know there are security measures
- There is no need to wait for first responders to arrive saving lives
- Teachers should be allowed to have guns in school because regular citizens have and will stop bad guys with guns, criminals are less likely to commit crimes on places with security measures and there is no need to wait for first responders saving lives.

Class 4:
What did you learn from Scott Cantor’s presentation about History of Internet 2.0 that may help you in our class or in your other academic pursuits?
- I thought the presentation was very interesting and that nothing private if it goes over the internet unless encrypted and to be mostly safe you have to encrypt things your self.
- I don’t think this will help me in my classes or academic pursuits, but it helps me better understand how the internet works with multiple layers and will make me more cautious with what I do on it.
Did he challenge your thinking?
- No, but I found that I should take my online presence and security more seriously
Did he offer you advice you will use?
- He did say that we could encrypt the data we send out and not store our history as it’s now stored in the cloud and anyone can access it i.e. use incognito or delete you browser history frequently. I don’t think I will use any of these as I don’t really care and I am not searching anything alarming.

2 Arguments with sources
There is no need to wait for first responders to arrive saving lives
- The average school shooting lasts 12.5 mins while the average police response time is about 18 mins
- Although people still have to wait for the first responders, stopping a shooter as early as possible can and will save lives.
Criminals are less likely to commit a crime when they know there are security measures
- People are afraid to commit crimes if they know there will be resistance and has to put in a lot of effort to plan and execute the crime
- Since 9/11 there have been more Air Marshals and Pilots have sidearms preventing other terrorist attacks
