Class 6: Draft

Here is the rough draft for my essay.

Guns on Campus

Teachers should be allowed to have guns in school because regular citizens have and will stop bad guys with guns, some schools and districts may not have the budget for school resource officers or security guards and there is no need to wait for first responders saving lives. Sadly in recent years the amount of school shootings has risen in the United States while this is a very tragic there has been little done to fight this epidemic. Many lawmakers have successfully put more restrictions on guns in the state and federal level while gun violence is still on the rise. Since the recent tragedy at Majority Stoneman Douglas High school, where a student brought an AR-15 and open fired in the hallways killing 17 students and injuring many more, the debate on whether teachers should be allowed to have firearms on campus has arisen.

(Want to add more here any idea would be nice for the first paragraph)

Teachers should be allowed to have guns in school because regular citizens have and will stop bad guys with guns. There have been many documented cases where a good guy with a concealed carry weapon or just a regular gun stopping a criminal from entering their home, robbing a store or stopping a shooting. For example in Fordia, a 71 year old man stopped two armed robbers who were threatening the lives of the workers and citizens. Abc News reported “The 71-year-old then begins to fire at both of the young men, who appear to panic and hurriedly fall over as they flee the scene … They have been charged with attempted armed robbery with a firearm and felony criminal mischief” (par. 3). Another case where a 14 year old boy stopped a robber from terrorizing his family. Fox news reported “The teen and his brothers and sisters were at home alone at their residence … When he got to the top of the stairs, he saw a man breaking through the front door and point a gun at him. The boy shot the 37-year-old man, who is in critical condition but expected to survive and be booked into jail” (par. 3). These two cases show how two different people were able to save their own life and the lives of the people around them by using guns to subdue the criminal quickly. This could translate into the classroom where teachers, if properly trained, can stop a school shooting saving the lives of many kids. An example where a man was able to stop a mass shooting was in the Texas church shooting. The Scott Neuman of the npr stated “Willeford says his daughter alerted him to what sounded like shots being fired at the nearby First Baptist Church … When he saw the suspect, identified by police as Devin Patrick Kelley, the two exchanged gunfire” (par 3 and 7). Unfortunately 26 people were killed and many more were injured before Willeford arrived.

Many people argue that the good guys are always too late for instance in the Texas church shooting as Willeford did not arrive until 26 people were killed. As German Lopez from Vox stated “If Texas is an example of this concept in action, though, it sure doesn’t seem to work. Before another armed person intervened against the Sutherland Springs gunman, he had already killed at least 26 people and injured approximately 20 others. He managed to shoot more than 40 people before “a good guy with a gun” reportedly helped stop him” (Par 4). German Lopez is stating that the “good guy” was not there in time, but he fails to realize that Willeford has to first get his gun out of his safe, load it and then run over to the church all while realizing that he might be killed. Arming teachers would allow for a quick and rapid response allowing the good guy to stop the bad guy.

Teachers should be allowed to have guns in school as some schools and districts may not have the budget for school resource officers or security guards. In many public schools the budget in based on what district alots the school. A government report show that the salaries and benefits for each employee is vast compared to how much is spent on school supplies (Public School Expenditures).

https://nces.ed.gov/programs/coe/indicator_cmb.asp

The graph shows that in the year 2014 – 15 about 80% of the schools budget was spent on paying the staff. Working in the labor force myself while estimating costs of certain products I noticed a majority of cost came from the people working at the company. For example the material cost may be $30.00 (Supplies) but the cost to produce and assemble the product may cost $70.00 (Salaries) so 70% of the cost comes from the salaries of the employees. Based off an article written by Jeffrey Dorfman he writes “preschool, primary, secondary, and special education teachers earn an average of $54,740 per year. If we drop the preschool teachers, salaries rise even more. Elementary and middle school teachers average $56,420 per year and secondary (high school) teachers earn an average of $58,170” (par. 4). The national average salary is about $48,642.15, based of social security administration, for reference. Based of an article written by Leyla Norman the average salary for a school resource officer as of May 2010 was $55,620 about the same as a teacher. While schools may want school resource officer or guards, they simply can’t afford them as most of their budget goes to educating kids and young adults. Due to lack funding asking staff to voluntarily conceal carry, if they have the permit, would allow the school to protect itself while not raising costs.

Some people might argue that it would cost more to arm the teachers as the school district would have to pay for the gun, ammo, training, psychological tests and it may be unsafe due to an accidental discharge of the firearm. While it is true that the school district will have to pay for training and psychological tests, the gun would be already be owned by the educator who volunteered. Ammo is very cheap about 19 cents per round for a 9mm caliber handgun. Compared to the cost to hire a school resource officer or an armed guard, it would save much more money for the school or school district if teachers were trained. It would also be very unlikely for an accidental discharge as well, based off an interview by Nikki Battiste form CBS of an educator in Colorado who volunteered to carry a sidearm he was asked “Is the gun loaded” where he replied “There is nothing in the chamber, the school board would not allow for us to put one in the chamber.” Having no rounds in the chamber means that it is impossible for the gun to accidentally discharge as the firing pin could not strike the primer (part of the bullet the ignites the gunpowder) of the bullet. One would have to rack the slide (cock) the gun to make it fire and that would only happen if a situation arises.

Teachers should be allowed to have guns in school as there would be no need to wait for first responders saving lives. Based of the National Sheriffs’ Association the average police response time is about 18 minutes to respond to a call, while the average school shooting lasts 12.5 minutes. In this time, it allows the active shooter to what they want with very little resistance causing for a very deadly mixture.

Class 6: Presentations

What did you learn from Laura Fathauer’s presentation about User-generated content and Mashups that may help you in our class or in your other academic pursuits? Did she challenge your thinking? Did she offer you advice you will use?

I thought her idea of using google maps to help map out event was really cool, especially to help solve  a murder. I don’t think I would use this later in my academic pursuits unless I would want to something similar such as a presentation. She did change my thinking as I can use online tools to help my research or solve a murder. I might use her advice, it depends on what projects I am have.

Class 5: Presentations

What did you learn from TradeMark Gunderson’s presentation about Copyright/Copyleft that may help you in our class or in your other academic pursuits? Did he challenge your thinking? Did he offer you advice you will use?

  • Trade marks presentation was very interesting (especially his music) but I found that a lot of the stuff he show I had already known or heard of and gave me a better definition of vocab and what I can do.
  • He did not really challenge my thinking but he definitely helped me, showing how I can use other peoples intellectual property.
  • I will use his advice as I will always need a work cited but also when I make videos for group projects in the future.

What did you learn from Nicole Craft’s presentation about iPads and Higher Education that may help you in our class or in your other academic pursuits? Did she challenge your thinking? Did she offer you advice you will use?

  • I think her presentation was very interesting and I wish it didn’t take the turn it did because I really wanted to learn about fake news.
  • She did as I was asking questions about why Ipads and not any other form of technology, I was just curious.
  • Yes, I plan on using the Ipad for better uses than just Netflix and more to take notes.

Class 2:

How could you integrate what Sam Rowe brought to the class into your academic activities?

  • I think everything that Sam showed to will be useful during the group project as well as other classes such as engineering. A lot of the Engineering classes do involve team work and I feel that it will be especially useful for communication so we won’t have to meet in person every time and people can be assigned to or pick things that they want to do.

Expert Q&A:

  1. What is your current stance on the gun policy in the United States
    • I agree with the majority of it. People should have the right to own guns.
  2. Do you think there should be stricter gun control?
    • There should be a way to prevent firearms to fall in the hands of the wrong people.
  3. Should professors/teachers be allowed to keep firearms on themselves if they choose to?
    • It is a possibility, should be very carefully determined who, how, and under what conditions.
  4. Do you think allowing teachers to arm them self would be effective in stopping tragedies such as Sandy Hook?
    • It is a possibility. There have been many cases when an armed citizen prevents, or minimizes a tragedy.
  5. Do you think it would be a good deterrent to stop criminals?
    • It is a step in that direction. School shootings happen, because to some extend there is no one to stop a shooter for a long time, there are no armed people.
  6. If educators were to arm themselves what kind of process should they have to go through to bring weapons to school?
    • Extensive training, psychological evaluations, strict conditions for storing the firearms.
  7. Should the school hire armed security guards instead of allowing teachers concealed firearms?
    • Yes, if possible.
  8. Should schools do both? (Question 6)
    • Yes, as long as it makes the school safer, not the opposite.
  9. What do you think the initial public view will be?
    • I think there will be a lot pro and against that. And both will be valid.
  10. How do you think the public’s view will change after a few years if a law is passed (Any level of government)?
    • If there were tragedies that were prevented by an armed teacher, probably the public view will lean more towards accepting it.

Class 4:

What did you learn from Scott Cantor’s presentation about History of Internet 2.0 that may help you in our class or in your other academic pursuits?

  • I thought the presentation was very interesting and that nothing private if it goes over the internet unless encrypted and to be mostly safe you have to encrypt things your self.
    • I don’t think this will help me in my classes or academic pursuits, but it helps me better understand how the internet works with multiple layers and will make me more cautious with what I do on it.

Did he challenge your thinking?

  • No, but I found that I should take my online presence and security more seriously

Did he offer you advice you will use?

  • He did say that we could encrypt the data we send out and not store our history as it’s now stored in the cloud and anyone can access it i.e. use incognito or delete you browser history frequently. I don’t think I will use any of these as I don’t really care and I am not searching anything alarming.

2 Arguments with sources

There is no need to wait for first responders to arrive saving lives

  • The average school shooting lasts 12.5 mins while the average police response time is about 18 mins
  • Although people still have to wait for the first responders, stopping a shooter as early as possible can and will save lives.

Criminals are less likely to commit a crime when they know there are security measures

  • People are afraid to commit crimes if they know there will be resistance and has to put in a lot of effort to plan and execute the crime
  • Since 9/11 there have been more Air Marshals and Pilots have sidearms preventing other terrorist attacks
