Year in Review

[ “Year in Review”  is where you should reflect on the past year and show how you have evolved as a person and as a student.  You may want to focus on your growth in a particular area (as a leader, scholar, researcher, etc.) or you may want to talk about your overall experience over the past year.  For more information, go to: http://honors-scholars.osu.edu/e-portfolio. G.O.A.L.S.

Global Awareness: In the modern world everything comes to be connected.  The issues of anyone place or people are intertwined with those of all others.  In particular the issues in the Middle-East affect us all, often in ways that we remain unaware of.  I plan to study those issues and hopefully to understand more about the world by doing so.
Original Inquiry: While I hope to break ground in Middle-East studies, I also want to study philosophy, as I consider it the “central field” around which all others are affected.  I have already had some philosophical discussions here on campus, I hope to produce some of my own research, perhaps introducing my own thoughts on issues thousands of years old.
Academic Enrichment: I think that my major is very pertinent to what I hope to do with my career, that being Middle-East studies.  I think that by taking honors classes, I will be better able to prepare myself for my career path.
Leadership Development: I am a part of the Alexander Hamilton society and am currently applying for a position as an officer.  I think that gradually, I will reach higher positions as well, and thereby learn leadership skills.  I may also become more engaged in religious life on campus, possibly finding a leadership role there as well.
Service Engagement: I plan to engage in organizations both here and off campus.  I think that by participating in AHS I will be helping to a degree.  While in high school I participated in a number of community service groups but found most of them lacking in a large scale effect.  I think that what I will be looking to do this time around is to find a way to have an even larger impact, and help as many people as possible.

Career

[“Career” is where you can collect information about your experiences and skills that will apply to your future career.  Like your resume, this is information that will evolve over time and should be continually updated.   For more information, go to: http://honors-scholars.osu.edu/e-portfolio. Artifacts

The Union really is the center of campus.  From club meetings to holiday celebrations, there is always something going on at the Union to make life more interesting.  Even though there are plenty of other places to go, I often find myself heading back to the union and being surprised by something new.  Never was this more apparent to me than during the first day of Hannukah and it was great to feel a sense of community in that way.

About Me

My name is Aidan Geis, and I am a first year International Studies major also working towards an Arabic minor.  Despite being born in Pittsburgh, I look a lot more like I came here from 1920’s Ireland.  In keeping with that look, I have a very old style of writing, if you haven’t deciphered as much already, and a very old fashioned approach to college, in that I hope to learn quite a lot on quite a number of things while doing as little math as is humanly possible.  In a university this large I am looking forward to getting to explore, meet new people and contemplate the meaning of the universe.  So nothing too difficult.

All men dream: but not equally. Those who dream by night in the dusty recesses of their minds wake in the day to find that it was vanity: but the dreamers of the day are dangerous men, for they may act their dreams with open eyes, to make it possible.” -T.E. Lawrence
