Gateway NMR Conference is a one- two-day meeting held each year in the eastern part of the Midwestern United States, which includes the states of Ohio, Michigan, Pennsylvania, Kentucky, Indiana, W. Virginia, and Tennessee. The Gateway NMR Conference brings together NMR practitioners to share their “latest and greatest” research, get to know each other, share news and know-how, initiate potential collaborations, and more. NMR Researchers from academia, national laboratories, and industry are encouraged to attend. The meeting also provides an opportunity to interact with vendors to learn about their products and services.
History of 1.2 GHz NMR spectrometer
The strong support by the Gateway NMR community, together with the US-NMR community at large, were essential in the lead-up to the NSF proposal for the acquisition of the 1.2 GHz NMR spectrometer. An RI-1 mid-scale research infrastructure pre-proposal was submitted to the NSF in early 2019, which was invited for a full proposal in the Spring of 2109 with R. Brüschweiler as PI and Mark Foster, Philip Grandinetti, Chris Jaroniec, and Blanton Tolbert as co-PI’s. The award was made in the Fall of the same year. At that time, the 1.2 GHz (28 Tesla) NMR magnet technology, using a low-temperature superconducting magnet with a high-temperature superconducting insert, was still under development at Bruker. Less than a year later, the first 1.2 GHz NMR spectrometer was installed by Bruker in Europe (CERM, Florence, Italy). The 1.2 GHz NMR spectrometer at Ohio State was the 9th instrument installed world-wide and the first in North America. Three more 1.1 GHz ultrahigh-field NMR spectrometers have been installed in the U.S., at St. Jude Children’s Hospital (Memphis), U. Wisconsin (Madison), and U. Georgia (Athens)).
