G.O.A.L.S.: Service Engagement

I believe that as a privileged, white female, it is my duty to help others in my community who are not as fortunate as I. This semester I interviewed for a position in College Mentors for Kids where I am hoping to be able to mentor a child from an inner city school. As an adult, I plan on fostering children. I believe that this is a great way to help underprivileged kids and the community. In addition to helping children, I also have a passion for helping animals. I am a member of Buckeyes for Canines, which is a club that volunteers at two shelters: Pets Without Parents and the Franklin County Animal Shelter. As an adult, I also plan on fostering animals. Service engagement is extremely important to me, so I am hoping that I will be able to provide as much service to the community, both during my time here at Ohio State and when I am an adult, as possible.

One fall weekend in November, my ACES peer mentor, Amber Long, and I decided to venture into the city of Columbus for a day trip to COSI. This mini-adventure, as chaotic as it was, was one of the best times I have had since coming to Ohio State in August. We took the COTA into the city and, after getting lost on the streets of Columbus, finally made our way to COSI. Neither Amber nor I had ever been before, so this experience was new and exciting for both of us. Amber and I really bonded during the trip over the fascinating exhibits that COSI has to offer. I learned that Amber is much stronger than me, and Amber learned that I am the least flexible person to ever walk the planet. This trip opened my eyes to the limitless opportunities that exist outside of the Ohio State campus. It also taught me that going on an adventure with someone is a fast way to bond with them. My COSI adventure with Amber was a very educational (and interesting) experience and one that I will never forget.

About Me

Natalie graduation

I am a first-year student at The Ohio State University. Born in Atlanta, Georgia, I moved to Basking Ridge, New Jersey when I was 16 years old where I graduated from Ridge High School. I am a member of the Advocates for Communities and Education Scholars Program and am majoring in Mathematics Education. Upon receiving a degree from OSU, I plan on working for Teach for America, an organization that provides high quality education to students in low-income communities. In addition to teaching, I plan on fostering children and animals that need stable and loving homes. I am involved in a variety of clubs at Ohio State, including Buckeyes for Canines and College Mentors for Kids. Outside of school, I enjoy playing tennis, as well as volunteering with animal rescue organizations. I also love to read and watch Netflix, and I can’t wait to cheer on the Buckeyes in any sporting event. Go Bucks!!

Year in Review

[ “Year in Review”  is where you should reflect on the past year and show how you have evolved as a person and as a student.  You may want to focus on your growth in a particular area (as a leader, scholar, researcher, etc.) or you may want to talk about your overall experience over the past year.  For more information, go to: http://honors-scholars.osu.edu/e-portfolio. G.O.A.L.S.: Global Awareness

As a teacher, global awareness is a very important tool in creating an inclusive environment where everyone can feel safe and comfortable. During my time here at OSU, I plan on studying abroad in order to gain insight into a culture (or cultures) other than my own. I believe that there is a ton to learn from other cultures and that the knowledge gained can be used to improve policies in the United States. I hope to study abroad in Finland, which has the best educational system in the world. By studying here, I hope to bring back techniques to improve the quality of education that my students will receive from me.

Career

[“Career” is where you can collect information about your experiences and skills that will apply to your future career.  Like your resume, this is information that will evolve over time and should be continually updated.   For more information, go to: http://honors-scholars.osu.edu/e-portfolio. Artifact: Matt Shepard is a Friend of Mine

My freshman year of college, I had to do a film project for my ACES seminar. My movie was “Matt Shepard is a Friend of Mine,” a documentary about a young man who was brutally murdered because of his sexual orientation. This film really opened my eyes to the threats and dangers that people in the LGBTQ+ community face every day. Seeing the story of Matt Shepard’s life taught me to not take life for granted, and to support and protect my fellow LGBTQ+ members. It prompted me to educate myself on laws and regulations protecting the LGBT community and work to gain full protection under the law for LGBT people. As a future teacher, I hope to provide a safe space for LGBT youth and be hyper vigilant about bullying and harassment of students in the LGBTQ+ community.
