My First Semester

Over the first semester of college, I have become more aware of my personality type. During one of my STEM EE Scholars classes, our task was to take a test to figure out what type of personality we were. After taking the test I discovered that I am an INTJ. After reading my results, I found that my personality type almost perfectly matched who I am. INTJ strengths are their imagination and strategic mind, self confidence, independence and decisiveness, determination, open-mindedness, and their ability to learn new skills quickly and easily. INTJ weaknesses are their arrogance, judgement towards others due to over confidence, over analyzation (especially in relationships), and their loath for highly structured environments. After reading about my personality type, I started thinking about the strengths and weaknesses and how they relate to how I act. The biggest reason I think I am an INTJ is because of the way I handle personal challenges. If there is something I am trying to make, nothing can stop me — not even sleep. One downside to my unstoppable drive to work on personal projects is my inability to balance it with my school work. Because of this personality test, I am going to be looking in my day to day life for the weaknesses that come along with the INTJ personality type and work on turning them into strengths. This activity allowed me to better understand what I am already good at as well as pointing out what I could use some work on. Knowing my personality type has changed my mindset in group work, making me more aware of how my personality type clashes or works well with others.

Artifact 2

Ever since football season started, my love for OSU has increased. I have lived in Columbus almost my entire life and have attended multiple OSU football games, but I have never really cared about them. Since I began college at OSU, I have gone to every single home game with the group of friends I made in the first week. Watching the games with a group of close friends (instead of my parents) has not only been a great way to spend time with the people I care about, but it has also given me a passion for OSU football and a large sense of school spirit. Going to the football games with my friends has actually given me a reason to pay attention to what is happening on the field – at least what I can make out from the top of the student section. All of my friends know more about football than I do, in fact my roommate even played in high school, and thanks to them, I can now follow what is happening. While I am sad the season is coming to an end, I look forward to watching the Buckeyes send that team up north back to where they came from. My positive experience with football has encouraged me to try out watching more sports with my friends.

Artifacts

Three days before college started, I arrived on campus and moved in as a welcome leader. The OWLs (Ohio welcome leaders) are a group of people who help smooth the move in process by unloading cars and carrying belongings up to the rooms. Being an OWL was important to me because not only did I want to help other students transition into college, I wanted to meet new friends. Being an OWL helped increase my social skills by communicating with people I had never met before for the entire day. I think it is important to remember my experience as an OWL because I enjoyed helping and meeting new people much more than I thought I would.

About Me

Hi! My name is Jack Garner – I am a mechanical engineering major at The Ohio State University. My hobbies include rock climbing, swimming, photography, 3D printing, and flying drones. I also love to travel and am an avid adrenaline junkie.

My interest in STEM started at an early age. I have always enjoyed problem solving and welcome challenges. I have a passion for making things work better.

I am majoring in mechanical engineering and am hoping to obtain an internship for this summer. Before I headed off to OSU, I interned in the R&D lab at CVG (Commercial Vehicle Group), where I worked on numerous prototype projects and overhauled several of their industrial 3D printers. I am experienced in Java, Solidworks, Fusion 360, Excel, AutoCAD, various CAM/Slicing software, and proficient at machining.
