Davis & Young, and Collins, Roche, Utley & Garner Law firms: My father is an attorney, who originally worked for Davis & Young Law, and later separated with them to create CRUG Law. I was employed by both, starting as a summer assistant and temporary secretary. After creating CRUG, I was employed as a temporary summer assistant. My jobs included answering phones, filing, managing digital files and mail. I didn’t really like working there though, as the work was monotonous, and the atmosphere too strict. You wouldn’t see people all day. Everyone whispered. I had to dress up to go to work every day. I had no comprehension of the matters I was helping with.
COSI Volunteering: During high school I was a guest services volunteer at COSI in Columbus. I actually attribute a great deal of job experience to this volunteer job. As a guest service volunteer, I was tasked with greeting guests as they entered the center, managing the movie theater and planetarium ticket scanning and guest entry, working the guest help desk–which entailed helping lost children, renting strollers and wagons, issuing parking passes, and admitting people to the upstairs offices for the business side of COSI. (I also got to use the hook on the unicycle :P) Additionally, as a guest service volunteer, I would be sent on security rove, asked to patrol for a certain amount of time to answer questions, maintain general safety, and check on exhibit functionality. When the traveling exhibits were hosted, the guest service volunteers would be sent to work the ticket desk and act as announcers for the current exhibit. I was given that position during the Sherlock Holmes International Exhibit. COSI provided great job experience since they had a number of different job types inside one facility–movie theater, store, security personnel, janitorial, and general museum guest service.
OSU College of Pharmacy Central Business Office: I am currently employed as a Student Administrative Assistant in the CBO for the Pharm School. I really enjoy this job, since I have developed friendships with my coworkers, and feel like I contribute more regularly to important tasks. I’m trusted with more, and have done more for this job than in the law firms. My job currently entails providing reports for ongoing grants, reconciling, keeping erequests and etravel up to date, and helping with various tasks for the Dean’s Suite, creating activities for the grad students and helping log extensive data. I help with faculty personal projects and organize a lot of the digital information for current or upcoming pharmacy events. I’ve worked much longer and more consistently with this job, and have developed more extensive knowledge of OSU’s databases and Microsoft programs.
