  • Global Awareness: Students cultivate and develop their appreciation for diversity and each individual’s unique differences. For example, consider course work, study abroad, involvement in cultural organizations or activities, etc. For my Global Awareness, I am involved heavily in the Collegiate Council on World Affairs, which is a club dedicated to engaging students in global awareness. Every week, we discuss world news, have a speaker present on a topic about world affairs they are passionate about, and every so often host a model UN conference which allows for students to explore different world perspectives on myriad issues. Additionally, I plan on continuing attending this club and going to many Model UN conferences around the country to engage with other students as well as other issues that I am not familiar with. Additionally, I plan to start going to the Latino Student Association to engage with other students from my culture.
  • Original Inquiry: Honors & Scholars students understand the research process by engaging in experiences ranging from in-class scholarly endeavors to creative inquiry projects to independent experiences with top researchers across campus and in the global community. For example, consider research, creative productions or performances, advanced course work, etc. My second semester, I will be gaining a Philosophy research credit that will allow me to further my major, as well as begin considering ideas that may one day help me write my own original thesis. This is a perfect segue, into my plan to do a senior thesis in Philosophy, as I plan on taking many classes and engaging with many professors who will aid me in developing a creative pursuit of my own that will eventually transform into an original thesis that is possibly even transferrable to graduate level work.
  • Academic Enrichment: Honors & Scholars students pursue academic excellence through rigorous curricular experiences beyond the university norm both in and out of the classroom. I plan on not only meeting all of my general education credits, but exceeding them, as well as picking up a double major in Political science to enrich my intellect and make sure that I am well prepared to interact with different ideas in a well rounded way. Additionally, I attend the philosophy club every week to make sure I am well versed in different topics, but also to learn and explore different academic ideas that I had not considered before.
  • Leadership Development: Honors & Scholars students develop leadership skills that can be demonstrated in the classroom, in the community, in their co-curricular activities, and in their future roles in society. I will pursue an education abroad that will allow me to lead in different cultures, as well as with different languages. I plan on going to a Spanish speaking coutnry to advance my Spanish and to make better my leadership.
  • Service Engagement: Honors & Scholars students commit to service to the community.] In association with the Morrill Scholarship, I will be participating in the Boys and Girls Club mentorship program, but I plan on extending that program all four years of college into a relationship with kids that can lead them to positively better themselves and to pursue their dreams that they may not have pursued had they not met someone who encouraged and pushed them to pursue. Additionally I will continue to partake in ocassional volunteering through Model UN to help high schoolers learn more about world politics and civil discourse and diplomacy that can help the world become a better place.
