Hi, I ‘m Freeman and I am an undergraduate Freshman at OSU pursuing a major in civil engineering. I’ve always been a fan of math and problem solving so engineering seemed like a reasonable pathway. This decision was solidified when I took a 2 year engineering course my junior and senior years of high school with an amazing teacher that became my mentor. I loved every minute of those years in that class, from planning out projects in Auto-CAD to wiring arcade buttons together in the empty shell of a machine. After deciding to pursue engineering as a career, I had to pick a specific discipline. Every field seemed so appealing, but what really helped me come to my conclusion is traveling with my family to big cities like New York City or Beijing. While many people see the buses and subway networks as just another mundane part of life, I was just a kid from the Suburbs in Ohio who had never seen anything of the sort in my entire life. The ability to pay a mere 2 quarters to travel all of the way from one end of a massive city to the other blew my mind, and that fascination sticks with me still to this day. This led me to pick civil engineering as my major, a discipline that might not be as flashy as chemical or biomedical but is just as if not more impactful.
