My First Year in Review

My first year at Ohio State was a whirlwind that ended much more quickly than I could have imagined. I experienced and got involved more than I ever imagined I would. From International Affairs Scholars, to UNICEF, to employment with Campus Grinds, I experienced a wide range of opportunities offered by Ohio State. I took so much out of my academics as well; I added a Korean major and a business minor and have become much more confident in my Korean skills. I look forward to seeing how much more I can learn next year.

IA Toronto Trip

Through the International Affairs Scholars group I was able to go to Toronto for a weekend with other students and meet with an incredible speaker and go to interesting museums. This is a photo I took of Casa Loma, the only castle in North America. Of all the places we went to on the trip, this was my favorite because I felt as if I was living the history of the castle and of Toronto. It was an experience that I will not forget and I recommend anyone traveling to Toronto to take the time to come out to Casa Loma as well.

UNICEF

I joined the club Unicef- OSU within a few months of my first year at Ohio State, and it is a decision I am very glad I made. Participating in extra-circulars at Ohio State has opened me up to a new world here; I have made new friends and participated in experiences I never imagined I would have. I walked down the middle of High Street during the Homecoming Parade in a pumpkin box to promote UNICEF trick-or-treat, helped raise thousands of dollars for Syrian Refugees by being part of organizing a dance at the Union, and much more. I did not know that by joining a club I could have an impact on people during my first year in college, but now I know that my voice can be heard and that my participation can make a difference.

History 2402 Final Essay

History 2402 Final Essay Revised

This is the final essay for one of my favorite classes that I took this past school year: Modern East Asian History. I have grown up loving history classes, and to take a class like this with history and perspectives that were completely novel to me was a great challenge that I highly enjoyed, Furthermore, my major focus is Eastern Asia, so the content aligned with my interests. I am very proud of this essay, as it is one of the first major papers that I worked on in college, and I am very happy with the outcome. This paper discusses China’s evolution into an international force throughout modern history, and offers an insight into China’s culture, economy, and government of the past and present.

Artifacts

millenium goals presentation

This presentation’s goal is to discuss the seventh UN Millennium Goal, Ensure Environmental Sustainability. We chose Brazil as our region to focus on because it is relatively large and diverse, contains a large portion of the Amazon Rainforest, is the number one coffee producer in the world, and has recently come into the spotlight as it is the next nation to host the Olympics. This artifact is important to me because not only is it my first college project, but the topic under discussion is also an interest of mine. Ensuring environmental stability is important to social equality as well as health, which was reflected in the freshman summer reading book, Good Food Revolution. Presenting this with the group was valuable preparation for presentations I will have to do in the future, and also reflects my international interests as an International Affairs scholar and International Studies major.

About Me

IMG_1516Hi, I’m Shelby and I’m excited to start school at OSU this year! I’m an IA Scholar and I’m majoring in International Studies with a focus on Eastern Asia. I’m from Cincinnati and graduated from Walnut Hills, where I was part of the ski and photography club. I studied abroad in South Korea the summer between my junior and senior year and loved it, so I am excited to continue to learn Korean through OSU. My picture was taken during one of my visits to Korea. While I’m not exactly sure what I want to do after school,  I hope that the work I do in the future helps people across borders better understand each other and their cultures.
