Finding the Right Fit

The biggest problem I found with the generic mask pattern was the improper fit. So, I decided to see how I could fix this.
I wanted to use the plastic pieces left over from the sports bra to create a new adjustable strap that would use a minimal amount of elastic.
I sewed the elastic to alter in length, but also lock in place at a maximum adjustment.
It’s adjusted by simply pulling on the loose end behind the ear.
These will be the new straps.
I sewed these straps into a new mask.
Next would come the nose bridge.
I decided to make an external pocket on the bridge of the nose to hold a wire.
I sewed the pocket on, and inserted a bent paperclip.
The wire piece can be inserted and removed for washing and for preferred comfort.
I experimented with different wire types and shapes, and found that since the paperclips were a higher gauge, they were a less precise and comfortable fit.
The large figure-eight-shaped wire piece with a lower gauge provided the most comfortable and effective fit.
I tested the final fit…
…and found that the straps adjusted easily and sat comfortably behind the ears…
…the nose bridge molded well to my face….
…and I could now wear the mask without fogging my glasses.

  1. I really enjoyed looking through your process so far. My mom is a glasses wearer and still working on the front lines during this time. She has definitely been frustrated with the masks she was using fogging her glasses (she’s luckily found the correct fit now) but it is really exciting to see you work through this problem!

  2. So cool to see your process! Will you be making this an open-source design somewhere? Are you planning on making a certain number to give to your aunt?
