About FYLI: First Year Leadership Initiative (FYLI) is a student cohort that is dedicated to helping Buckeyes flourish in their first year at Ohio State. FYLI establishes meaningfully involved student leaders. Our weekly meetings include speakers aimed toward professional and social development, leadership workshops, service opportunities, and a Buckeye community that will last beyond the first year. Students leave our year-long organization with a promoted sense of self-awareness and an attitude for success that will continue to foster success as they develop into young professionals.
Mission Statement: To create a year-long program for first-year students, aimed at developing leadership skills and educating members about the various involvement opportunities at the university. The culmination of the program will be a service project that encourages students to utilize both leadership skills and organizational cooperation in order to give back to the university.
Program Structure:
Weekly Meetings: Members will be required to attend weekly meetings, which will take place every Tuesday from 8-9pm. During these meetings, there will often be presentations and guest speakers from various student organizations and student life departments. Members will be able to network with different student and staff leaders from around the university during these meetings. This is to help members assess how they wish to be involved around Ohio State. Meetings will also focus on leadership activities and planning or participating in service projects.
Cohorts: Students will also be split into a cohort group, with an Executive Member as their leader. These cohorts will be working as cohesive groups on organizational projects, service projects, and leadership activities. Aside from the required weekly meeting, cohort leaders will organize additional meet-ups for the group (such as dinners, movies, field trips, etc), providing each FYLI member with a smaller, more intimate group of students to grow with during their freshman year.
Program Advantages: Throughout the year, we hope that FYLI members will begin to grow and prosper as future student leaders of Ohio State. Furthermore, we hope to provide them with the skills and knowledge that will make them competitive candidates for student leadership positions, honoraries, internships, research, possibilities, study abroad opportunities, and much more.
We also hope that by networking with other student and staff leaders from all aspects of the University, you will begin to appreciate the diverse wealth of opportunities that Ohio State has to offer!Previous Speakers:
