In the mean time… Feel free to take a look at some more of the awesome things we did this past spring!

A workshop presented by OSU’s Self Defense Club provided an introduction to basic self defense skills that everyone should know. We also brought in ambassadors from the Student Wellness Center and the Office of Diversity and Inclusion for meetings on health, diversity, and the many different resources that are available to all students here on campus!

Many FYLI members also participated in this year’s BuckeyeThon, a 24-hour dance marathon to raise money for pediatric cancer research and Nationwide Children’s Hospital. As one of the largest philanthropy events in the state, more than 5,000 Buckeyes came together to raise a new record of $1,603,437.49!

We also had the incredible opportunity to meet and hear from Dr. J, Senior Vice President for Student Life, at one of our last meetings of the semester. She spoke to us about what it takes to be a true leader both here at Ohio State as well as beyond college.

Thank you to the FYLI class of 2018 for such a great year!

With FYLI Love,

Drew

What has FYLI been up to??

Hey everyone!

A lot of great things have been happening this year so far and we would like to share them with you!

When they were first told that their cohort leader was hiding somewhere on campus and they were going to have to go find them, our first-years were a little concerned. However, they were all smiles when they finally found their cohort leader waiting for them with candy and treats!

Service continues to be a key pillar for our FYLI’ers, and volunteer trips to the Mid-Ohio Foodbank and Colony Cats allowed us to give back to our communities. A tour of the Orton Hall Bell Tower and the Oval was also a fun opportunity to learn a little bit about our campus and get into the Halloween spirit!

More fun at our FYLI holiday party which included an ugly sweater contest and a white-elephant gift exchange!

2016-17 Year in Review

Hi FYLI’ers!

With another great school year completed and summer now in full swing, we thought we would take the time to reflect on some of the activities we got to do as an org throughout the year:

We started fall semester out strong by revealing cohort groups, allowing members to break out into small groups and get to know one another on a more individual level. Over the course of the year, cohort group members arranged to meet outside of our weekly general body meetings, either to grab coffee or lunch, hang out on the Oval, or explore the Short North and Columbus!

In October, the FYLI-favorite Ghost Tour meeting got everyone in the Halloween spirit with inside stories on some of the most haunted buildings at OSU. Stops along the way included Orton Hall, Mirror Lake, University Hall, and many others. A night full of laughs, spooks, and scares was certainly one to remember!

Fall semester also brought personal growth for everyone, both socially and professionally. While navigating the chaos of meeting new people, joining other clubs, scheduling classes, and studying for exams, FYLI served as a supportive home-base in which friends and familiar faces could discuss weekly highs and lows and personal strengths and weaknesses. Workshops on networking, resume building, and public speaking further helped students develop important life skills necessary for leadership and success.

After a relaxing Winter Break, FYLI kicked back into full force with fun activities such as an Ohio Union scavenger hunt and a colors personality test, fostering teamwork and self-reflection.

Upholding service as one of our key pillars, FYLI also had many opportunities to volunteer and give back to our community throughout the year. A day-trip to the Habitat for Humanity ReStore in Columbus had students installing new shelves, stacking and organizing wooden boards, and rearranging used furniture to put on display. Another trip to the Ronald McDonald House at Nationwide Children’s Hospital let students tour the state-of-the-art facilities and bake cookies for the residents. Both experiences allowed FYLI’ers to partake in meaningful service and broaden their perspective on the importance of volunteer work as a whole.

As the spring semester came to a close and friendships grew stronger, we got to explore some of the awesome places around Columbus that make the city so unique. A FYLI brunch at the North Market was the perfect way to escape the frustrations of studying for exams, and a game night at Kingmakers consisted of unlimited boardgames and delicious hot chocolate! We hope that the FYLI class of 2016 had an amazing first year of college at Ohio State, and we know that they all have very bright futures ahead of them as students and leaders. We are looking forward to meeting a new class of first-years in the fall and can’t wait for another great year!

Apply to FYLI!

Hey, first-years! The First Year Leadership Initiative application is now live. This is an opportunity to get involved on campus that you surely won’t want to miss! The executive board and several FYLumni put our heads together to share some of our favorite reasons to #GoFYLI:

  • Getting to up-close and personal with priceless advice from campus leaders such as Dr. J (Vice President of Student Life), Dr. Drake (President of the University), or Don Stenta (Director of Recreational Sports).
  • Hearing from upperclassmen Buckeyes about their experiences on and off campus during their time at Ohio State.
  • Receiving professional training on resumé building, interviewing, public speaking, and much more before most other first-year students have the opportunity to.
  • Forming a family of Buckeyes both young and old and sharing unforgettable memories throughout the year.
  • Much more!

If you’re interested in applying, be sure to fill out the application by 11:59p on Friday, September 9. Until then, we wish you luck during your first couple weeks of the semester!

With FYLI Love,

Sam Lechner & Nick Prayner
