Year in Review

Sophomore Year – 2017 to 2018

This year has been full of global experiences and education for me! Over Spring break, I traveled outside of the United States for the first time to the Bahamas! I spent so much time talking to locals on Bimini Island and learning about their culture and history. My global education is going to continue this summer, as I will also be departing on a month long study abroad trip to Paris, France. During my education abroad program I will be visiting important sites, practicing my French speaking skills, and also learning about the history and traditions of Paris. In order to prepare for this trip, I enrolled in numerous french classes this past year. Along with the introductory class to the education abroad program, I declared a minor in French, thus continuing in my education with the language. I therefore took one French grammar or language course each semester, and will continue to do so until I graduate. I also took a History of France class this semester in order to learn more about the country’s politics, government, and collective memories within history. I cannot wait to go on this trip and widen my global awareness even further!

When it comes to original inquiry, I am hoping to become more involved in research this upcoming year. Next semester I will be taking a research lab course on social psychology, in which I will be planning and running my own social experiment! I have also been learning about the research process in many of my psychology classes his past year, as well as some of my other GE courses, like anthropology. I took an introductory course on social psychology this past fall semester, and I enjoyed the class immensely, so I am looking forward to creating my own experiment after learning about so many different sociological findings and mannerisms in class. I am still interested in taking part in other psychology research labs on campus, and I intend to look into open positions next semester.

Pursuing academic excellence is incredibly important to me; I strive to put forth all of my effort into my classes and coursework every semester. I have always been highly committed to my education and getting the most out of my time in school. Therefore, I am taking classes that not only interest me but that will challenge me and encourage me to try new things. As previously stated, I declared a minor in French in order to continue improving in the language. As I am currently unsure with what I want to do in the future, I am taking a diverse range of classes. I hope that by taking different classes in diverse areas I will learn more about my strengths and interests in order to narrow down my future career plans and aspirations.

I have always thought of myself as a leader; I’ve always enjoyed helping others and starting new projects. That’s why I decided to run for a board position with the Ohio State Sailing team this year. I’ve been a member of the team since my freshman year, but I wanted to get more involved and help out the team in any way I could. I was voted to be secretary for the team and I’ve had so much fun completing my responsibilities and goals for the team. I also strive to be a good example and a leader to others in my position as a Members Associate at the RPAC.

I have done a few service events this past semester with the Newman Center on campus. I have also helped clean up Hoover reservoir with the sailing team twice this year. Depending on whether or not I come back to Columbus for the semester after my study abroad trip, I plan on volunteering with the parks service in Columbus; I also hope to explore other areas downtown and maybe start volunteering for other project areas! This past semester I have also been helping out with Bill Creedon’s campaign for   judge. I’ve had so much fun learning about local politics and taking part in grassroots projects with his campaign!

As an honors student at the Ohio State University, I want to broaden my global awareness by experiencing and learning about the diverse culture we have on campus, as well as across the world. I would love to learn about my heritage by going on a study abroad trip to Scotland or Slovakia. As a french student, I would also like to immerse myself in the culture by taking French electives, staying in the French club, and possibly by taking a trip to Paris or Brittany. I will be open to other people’s opinions and openly seek out new information on other cultures by taking History classes as well as a Classics course this upcoming Spring.

For my original inquiry, I would love to join a research project led by one of my professors or peers. I think it would be a great experience to learn more about psychological research from a professional and scholarly researcher. Because I am considering going to law school after I graduate, I also want to internship at a law firm to gain more experience and witness. I already have an interview set up with an attorney in Toledo for the summer after my sophomore year!

I absolutely love to learn new things, so it should be quite easy for me to enrich my academic career in college. I am taking a broad range of courses with a major in psychology and a minor in English, as well as numerous electives including history, French, and film classes. I will achieve my goal of learning and actively engaging in new experiences by taking as many honors and upper division courses as I can. By putting forth my greatest effort and taking these courses I have planned for myself, I can ensure my future success whether I choose to go to law school or graduate school.

As an office assistant for Lincoln House, I already consider myself a leader; I take pride in meeting and getting to know as many of my fellow residents and setting an example for them! I love to discuss possible fun events and activities for our dorm and just on my floor. I would describe my leadership skills as emphatic, determined, persistent and caring. I will also grow in my leadership through my involvement with the sailing team, French club, and film club!

I chose a psychology degree for my undergrad because I want to have a future career that will help others. I want to impact the lives of others by encouraging them to learn about themselves, accept themselves, and open themselves up to new experiences. Service has been a pivotal part of my life for many years, and I would love to continue that trend by joining a service club here on campus such as Encompass. I currently serve the Ohio State community by volunteering for the Newman Center, but I would love to branch out to downtown Columbus and even further by taking part in service trips to other countries.
