A summary of the requirements and desired qualifications for the Environmental Engineering position include at least an accredited bachelor’s degree in Environmental Engineering along with at least three years of “previous experience in an engineering, technical, or environmental field (in addition to education requirement).” Other qualifications include effective verbal and written communication skills, ability to define problems, collect and interpret data to draw conclusions, ability to interpret documents such as contracts, regulations, permit documents, procedural manuals, contracts and safety rules, ability to follow established procedures and follow directions with minimal supervision, ability to draft reports or data submittals at state and local levels. The requirements also include proficiency in multiple computer programs like Excel, Microsoft Windows, PowerPoint, Word, and other associated Microsoft programs. A to-do list to meet all qualifications necessary for the job while in college include graduating with an Environmental Engineering degree (OSU is an accredited engineering program, so all good on that front) and having three years of experience in an engineering, technical, or environmental field, so a long-term internship, paid or otherwise specifically in an on-the-field type of internship that leans more towards environmental experience. The other abilities I must get to qualify for the job listing I should and will hopefully foster and grow into with my required courseload here at OSU, since engineering majors have to take engineering fundamentals classes and other GEN EDs that help with the abilities to communicate, written or verbal, utilize and comprehend data, establish procedures, etc. The other abilities, like ‘interpret documents such as contracts, regulations, permit documents, procedural manuals, contracts and safety rules’ and ‘ability to draft reports or data submittals at state and local levels’ should be meet while interning, as I should specifically look for an internship or job that allows me to practice and familiarize myself with those duties. Gaining certification in Excel (I’m already extremely familiar with and proficient in the program) should also be done while I’m in college. The plan to make sure I meet these requirements will include graduating college, getting a long-term internship, paid or otherwise specifically in an on-the-field type of internship that leans more towards environmental experience. This internship should also allow me to practice and familiarize myself with those duties that I will not be able to get experience in via OSU courses.
