A notable experience I’ve had at OSU was very recently attending an Alumni Engineering Event at Knowlton a couple hours before the Ohio State v. Rutgers game. I was invited through Madi Crissinger, a suitemate, whose father is involved with the Engineering Department, specifically with the Biomedical and Bioengineering Department. Before this event, I had a rough understanding of what networking at OSU, and what networking in general looked like. Long story short, I now have some insight to the enormity of networking and networking at OSU’s engineering department, considering how accomplished most of the individuals at the event were. I met several individuals, both alumni who’ve had major success outside of the college and high up officials within the College of Engineering. I was briefly introduced the President of The Ohio State University and the Dean of the College of Engineering before moving on to the enjoyable platters of food at the event. I then talked to experienced individuals in Biomedical, Mechanical, and Aerospace and Aeronautical Engineering. Before this event, I had trouble understanding the sheer depth of what OSU’s Engineering Department has accomplished and the student it had produced. While most everyone I talked to had a unique personal career story and background, one person was extremely interesting–a chemical engineering alumni who had helped create, develop, and popularize the Pringles we know and love today. She gave great insight, emphasizing that while GPA shouldn’t be the first thing companies look at for internships, they usually do, so try your best, and get into leadership positions if at all possible. Overall, the Alumni Engineering Event is something I will look back on as motivation, because who wouldn’t want to be there in twenty years after achieving sucess, and as a representation of what a single student graduating from OSU’s College of Engineering can amount to.
