Year in Review

This past year at Ohio State has been one of the best years of my life. I have met so many great people and made a lot of friends that I feel I will have for the rest of my life. One of the expectations I had for college was that it was going to be very difficult, and it for sure is. I have realized that college is no joke and it take countless hours of hard work to strive. I have also had many classes that have made me learn things that some people never get the chance to. One of the biggest effects coming to Ohio State has had on me is responsibility. There are so many responsibilities I have had to learn like living on my own, working and going to class, feeding myself, and doing laundry. Also OSU has definitely helped me learn how to use a planner. There are always so many things going on and there is no way to keep track of all of it without one! One of my favorite parts about OSU is football season. I had the time of my life at all of the games, especially the Michigan game. I have never been more nervous my entire life than for that game and the experience is one that I wouldn’t trade the world for. I have also grown tremendously as a student. Coming to college makes you realize that school is definitely a lot harder than you think. I feel like most students at OSU breeze right through high school (including me) and then when you get here it’s a reality check. I have spent countless hours studying and doing homework, but it will all be worth it in the end. My main goal for next year is to get more involved with HSS and OSU. I want to join more clubs and have more things to do. I loved every minute I had this year at OSU and I cannot wait for next year!

G.O.A.L.S.

[ “G.O.A.L.S.” is a place where students write about how their planned, current, and future activities may fit into the Honors & Scholars G.O.A.L.S.: Global Awareness, Original Inquiry, Academic Enrichment, Leadership Development, and Service Engagement. For more information, go to: http://honors-scholars.osu.edu/e-portfolio. Delete these instructions and add your own post.

Global Awareness: Students cultivate and develop their appreciation for diversity and each individual’s unique differences. For example, consider course work, study abroad, involvement in cultural organizations or activities, etc .
Original Inquiry: Honors & Scholars students understand the research process by engaging in experiences ranging from in-class scholarly endeavors to creative inquiry projects to independent experiences with top researchers across campus and in the global community. For example, consider research, creative productions or performances, advanced course work, etc.
Academic Enrichment:

The person that I interviewed was my RA Ren Kuzmanovich. She is currently majoring in Biology and minoring in spanish and is also an HSS member. Also she is taking the MCAT in June. I chose to interview her because she is going into the medical field and so am I. Although she is going into medical school and I am trying to get into nursing school, I learned a lot from her. She gave information about research like the best way to get into it is to look online and email professors. She also mentioned that the best thing about HSS is the floor connection and making friends really fast, which I completely agree with. She also mentioned to study way ahead of time for the MCAT, or for me to get my license to be an RN. Overall I learned a lot from Ren and I’m glad I chose her.

Service Engagement:

To get my 20 hours of service, I volunteered with the Red Cross a lot, helped clean up streets on campus, made things for the homeless and needy, and volunteered at the animal shelter.

The most memorable service I did was making and delivering living kits for homeless people around campus and downtown. What makes this experience the most memorable is the fact that you are impacting the life of somebody that needs it the most. Homeless people literally have nothing and to be able to give them sanitizer, food, toothbrush and toothpaste, and kleenex probably mean the world to them. Impacting lives and helping people is something I am passionate about and to be able to help the homeless is like none other.

I volunteered with the service fair at the beginning of the school year for around 4 hours. After that I started to get really involved with the Red Cross. I volunteered with them for around 10 hours and I also helped them out by giving blood. I helped in Park Stradley, the RPAC, and the Union. I also volunteered with the Erie County Humane Society for 3-4 hours over Winter Break. I helped them by walking the dogs and taking care of cats in the facility. The last group I volunteered with was Project Impact and Boo Radley Society. What we did was make kits for the homeless and deliver the kits to them. We stuffed bags with supplies needed for living and then took them out and delivered them. This was around 2-3 hours.

Career

Coming into Ohio State, I had a declared major that I thought I would be pursuing. After going to pharmacy classes the first few weeks of college, I knew pharmaceutical sciences was not for me. Luckily, I had the resources I needed to figure out what major I would pursue next. I researched and talk to many advisors and my choice came down to Health Sciences. After going to the major fair that Health Science Scholars provided, I gained new knowledge on the GE Nursing program at Ohio State. It is a three year program I plan to attend to obtain my BSN and nurse practitioner license after I graduate. This is the plan I have chosen, and I will stick to it to reach my goal of becoming a nurse practitioner.

At Ohio State, there are endless amounts of resources available to the students. From the RPAC to the Thompson Library, there are so many resources available. I plan on utilizing these resources while I study at Ohio State. The Thompson Library is the place that I will be spending my time studying and doing homework. By going tho the 11th floor, there are no distractions available to me, and I will be able to get work down in an effective manner.

One of my plans to stay healthy and well in college is to have a diet that fits all of my needs. It is technically not a “diet” but more of a “watch what I eat” type of thing. I plan to stay away from junk food and to focus on eating the nutrients my body needs. I also plan to exercise to stay in shape. This will not be easy to do with the schedule I will have. I will have to use a planner and plan out my weeks accordingly.

College is definitely not going to be easy and I can tell just by being here for one semester. It is going to take a lot of hard work and determination to get the the place I want to be. I am going to have to stay focused and not get caught up in all of the distractions of a huge campus. If I can stay focused on my goals, then I am sure that I can graduate and attend the program that I want to.

I cannot wait for what the future brings for me and to see what I can achieve. By taking advantage of all the resources on campus and by working hard, I know I will be able to achieve anything. I plan on making life lasting relationships and to have an amazing time in college. I am excited for the future!
