G – I am currently taking Spanish 1103. In this course, we learn a lot about the different cultures in southern and central America. So far, we have learned about the cultures and geography of Colombia, Venezuela, and Bolivia. Going into this semester, I was all but positive that I was going to be done taking Spanish after this semester, but after learning that Spanish courses at Ohio State focus more on the culture aspect than the language, I am far more interested in continuing Spanish courses, and may even be interested in getting a minor in Spanish! I think that if I learn enough about the cultures (and language) I would feel confident in spending a summer abroad in a Spanish speaking country.

O – To me, Original Inquiry means getting yourself out there. If there are opportunities to speak with businesses that could give you a potential internship or job, you speak with those companies and try to create a relationship. As of now, I just plan on taking classes over the summer after my 1st year, but for the years to come after that, I hope to find internships to complete over the summers. Especially for me, because I’m hoping to get into the sports market, it’s very important to take whatever opportunities present themselves to me. In order to get into the sports market, it’s important to know people, so any chance to create relationships in the sports market is important for me to take.

A – I chose to be a data analytics major because I love analyzing. Especially when it comes to sports, I love analyzing stats. With that being said, I also have become very interested in computer science, so I thought that data analytics would be a great major for me. Although I haven’t decided on it yet, if I do decide to do a Spanish minor, it will be because I believe that it could be very useful in life to be able to communicate with people in a different language. Whether it be to visit another country, live in another country, for work, or just to communicate, there are really only positives that can come out of learning another language. In order to challenge myself within the classroom, I plan on taking honors courses when feasible, as well as taking courses that push me out of my comfort zone. The same goes for out of the classroom, as I would like to put myself in a position (through an internship) that will take me out of my comfort zone (in reference to my communication and data analyzing skills).

L – I am involved in a few clubs, but, as of now, I am most involved in Hillel. Hillel is essentially just a place where Jews can get involved in Jewish life. I am not in a position of leadership as of now, but I am a part of the Jewish Learning Fellowship (JLF). JLF is a fellowship that meets once a week to discuss societal issues. I believe that being on this panel will give me the confidence to have a leadership position in the future, as well as give me communication skills that will be very useful to have. Within the classroom, I think this will make it feel less awkward for me to go to a professor’s office hours, and outside of the classroom, I think this will be very useful when applying for jobs/internships.

S – I currently am not involved in any community service right now, but I would love to get involved. Whether it be through Buckeyethon, going to a food bank, or teaching children how to play sports, I think that volunteering is a great way to learn more about yourself and a great way to feel good about yourself. I have always been an active member of my community, and I would like to continue that here at Ohio State. I am strong in the belief of paying it forward, and I believe one of the best ways to do this is through community service.

About Me

Hello! My name is Andrew Friedman and I am a freshman from Cleveland. I am majoring in data analytics and I’m hoping to get into the sports market. While in high school, I played baseball, participated in the diversity acceptance program, and was involved in my local Jewish youth group. I’m so excited for the football and basketball games! I live in Taylor Tower: both of my parents lived in Taylor when they went to Ohio State! In the summers, my dad and I try to go to different baseball stadiums (I’m trying to go to all 3o). I’m including a picture of my dad and I from when we saw the Indians play in Houston this summer.
