Ruderman Inclusion Intern

As a Ruderman Inclusion intern, I work through Ohio State’s Hillel to create a more inclusive campus for students with seen and/or unseen disabilities. I work alongside my co-intern, Shira Ophir, to meet with students, Ohio State staff, and disability advocacy organizations to understand Ohio State’s needs when it comes to inclusion. We then use this information to create change through programming and awareness, whether that’s an educational meeting on what an unseen disability may be like, a food programming event on dietary restrictions, or a fidget making mixer, we are able to bring together different aspects of inclusion to make students feel welcomed at Hillel and Ohio State.

Year in Review

[ “Year in Review”  is where you should reflect on the past year and show how you have evolved as a person and as a student.  You may want to focus on your growth in a particular area (as a leader, scholar, researcher, etc.) or you may want to talk about your overall experience over the past year.  For more guidance on using your ePortfolio, including questions and prompts that will help you get started, please visit the Honors & Scholars ePortfolio course in Carmen. G.O.A.L.S.

  • Global Awareness: Students cultivate and develop their appreciation for diversity and each individual’s unique differences. As an International Development and Spanish double major, I have been learning about different cultures around the world, particularly those of Spanish speakers. Additionally, I hope to study abroad in order to improve my fluency in Spanish, and learn how to live in cultures other than my own.
  • Original Inquiry: Honors & Scholars students understand the research process by engaging in experiences ranging from in-class scholarly endeavors to creative inquiry projects to independent experiences with top researchers across campus and in the global community. I hope to complete research through the Second Year Experience Program, STEP, in a field related to International Development. While I’m not sure quite yet what it will be on, I hope that as I continue my coursework I find a professor to assist me in my research, and a subject that I am passionate about.
  • Academic Enrichment: Honors & Scholars students pursue academic excellence through rigorous curricular experiences beyond the university norm both in and out of the classroom. I am involved in the Mount Leadership Society Scholars program, where I continuously develop my skills in leadership and service. Additionally, I complete community service around Columbus at the CHOICES Domestic Violence Shelter in order to learn more about non-profits, and the work that is done there.
  • Leadership Development: Honors & Scholars students develop leadership skills that can be demonstrated in the classroom, in the community, in their co-curricular activities, and in their future roles in society. In addition to learning about and practicing leadership in my Scholars program, I also hold a fellowship at Hillel of Ohio State where I meet with people who have seen or unseen disabilities to find out how we can make campus and Jewish life on campus more accessible to them, and then I implement programs to bring these changes to fruition.
  • Service Engagement: Honors & Scholars students commit to service to the community. While I have completed several service projects through Mount, I am focused now on my volunteering at CHOICES, where I’m able to work in the kitchen and serve residents one on one. I’m also able to practice my Spanish skills, as many residents only speak Spanish.

About Me

My name is Hallie Fried and I’m from a suburb of Cleveland, Ohio called Solon. I grew up in a relatively small Jewish family with old religious traditions adapted to a modern lifestyle. Throughout high school, I was involved in politics and non-profit work. My most impactful organization was Girl Up, a United Nations campaign which fundraisers for and assists girls with getting an educating in developing countries such as Guatemala and India. At Ohio State, I am majoring in International Development Studies with a minor in Spanish. I’m looking forward to being involved in College Democrats, Mount Leadership Society, and other internationally based clubs. Additionally, I hope to study abroad in Spain during my third year so that I can become fluent in Spanish and immerse myself in the culture. One day, I’d like to work for the United Nations through implementing their Sustainable Development Goals.
