Project Statement

This project explored paper layering techniques to emphasize and exaggerate a sense of depth and deep space. When considering the concept of deep space, the relationship children have with television was something that quickly popped into my head. As they’re exposed to this type of media beginning at a young age, it can quickly become a black hole pulling them in and hypnotizing them to believe everything they see. Wanting to show this idea visually, I created a layered composition using grey-scale card stock that showed a child wearing glasses. The lens of the glasses are shaped as if they’re mini televisions and within them is where the hypnotic illusion lies. Using a repetitive pattern of black, grey, light-grey, and white, I layered rectangle pieces of paper behind the glasses and decreased their size as they went back. This method created a mesmerizing effect and in the scope of the entire composition, helped to depict the idea that children can be hypnotized by what they see on television.

Reflection

This project was a great one to start the new semester off with. The process of getting everything done was very experimental but in the end, I was really proud of my concept and the work I produced. Too much television consumption is something we can all relate to and so, trying to figure out ways I could visually show the negative impacts of it was challenging in the best way. The only areas I feel like I struggled in were using the Cricut to cut my cardstock and finding a thin enough material to adhere the layers to one another. This was only my second time using the Cricut and naturally, I ran into issues with booking a time to use it and figuring out how it functioned once I got the time. As for materials, some of my layer pieces were so tiny that finding something to stick them to the layer above them was virtually impossible. If I could do this project over again, I would fix it by simply increasing the scale of my entire project. This wouldn’t help my concept to be shown any further but it would greatly help with the craft aspect of it.
