Album Cover Photography

Visuals

This is my recreation of Olivia Rodrigo’s “driver’s license” album cover.
This is my recreation of Taylor Swift’s “cardigan” album cover.
This is my recreation of Drake’s “Way 2 Sexy” album cover.
This is my recreation of The Killer’s “Mr.Brightside” album cover.

Project Statement

This was my final project for a photography class I took first semester. It was completely open-ended, so I decided to recreate famous album covers. The idea for this came from a prior photo recreation project we did; I thoroughly enjoyed it and thought it would be fun to transfer that idea into the realm of music album covers. The four that I chose to do were “driver’s license” by Olivia Rodrigo, “cardigan” by Taylor Swift, “Way 2 Sexy” by Drake, and “Mr.Brightside” by The Killers. In one way or another, they’re all inspired by Ohio State. I shot the photography on my Nikon D-5100 camera and used photoshop to edit them into the correct format.

Reflection

Out of all the photography projects I’ve ever created, this was probably my favorite. It was so much fun to research different album covers and try to figure out which ones I could photograph on campus and turn into something OSU-related. I tried to pick four that were easily recognizable and could easily be photoshopped if I didn’t get the exact picture I needed to. That’s exactly what I did and I think they turned out great. The one thing I did struggle with, however, was lighting. We don’t have access to a room or any equipment on campus so I had to work with my dorm room lighting for the inside shots. I didn’t want to heavily edit light in or off of the photos so I experimented with different lamps and flashlights until I achieved something that was similar to the original photo. This wasn’t crazy difficult and made the entire process more fun anyways.
