Project Statement

This project explored the relationship between different dimensional shapes through the creation of an original 3D form. Simply put, my original form was based upon a vertical ascending square shape. Maintaining that planar view, I built the 3D form out backward using the template I designed. The original version was constructed using white bristol paper and tacky glue. The illusion version was constructed using the same material but instead of remaining plain, a cube-like shape was repeatedly drawn over its surface using a black felt pen. The principles that motivated this illusion style decoration were contrast, movement, unity, and of course, repetition. The black and white present a contrast naturally, while the repetitive cubes work together harmoniously to move the viewer’s eyes across the composition.

Reflection

With all of its complex, time-consuming, and experimental qualities, this project taught me so many valuable skills. Right off the bat, the conceptual idea behind it was very challenging. Prior to this project, I had hardly worked with 3D shapes so wrapping my head around how to create one along with its corresponding template wasn’t easy. Thus, it took many hours of trial and error with tape and random squares for me to finally get the basic form correct. After that, I produced it repeatedly until I got two forms that had close to perfect craft. This section of the project was especially frustrating due to the complicated nature of my template. Creating one form from start to finish would take around an hour and one small mistake could cause this whole process to restart. Once I got the final two, however, it was super rewarding and reminded me of the importance of consistency, patience, and practice. From there, creating the illusion version was very fun and a great way to wrap up this project.
