Year in Review

G- Global Awareness:

Although my considerations of studying abroad did not pan out due to a full course schedule during the school year and the potential for internships during the summer, I feel that my coursework through the general education courses I have taken has given me plenty of exposure to global society. My classical Greek civilization class and my classical mythology class had me exploring the historical background of some of our modern cultures, and my history of economics class taught me about the factors in the past that have influenced the development of nations around the world into the present day.

O- Original Inquiry:

The honors mathematics program at OSU gives students the perfect opportunity to experience higher level math. Closely intertwined with the ideals of higher level math is asking questions and researching to find answers. Throughout my time in honors math courses at OSU, I have found myself not only made to think creatively to find solutions to exercises given in class, but also encouraged to further look into topics that interest me and engage with mathematical research.

A- Academic Enrichment:

The courses I have completed and the coursework I plan to complete in the future represent diverse and engaging experience that will better my understanding of a variety of fields. The honors mathematics major provides a rigorous selection of courses which has and I anticipate will continue to allow me to explore the field of mathematics. My actuarial science major gives me outstanding preparation to apply mathematical skills and reasoning to real-world scenarios in what I want to be my future career. In addition to my major courses, a variety of GE courses give me more surface level exposure into other fields while not seeming dull or lacking challenge.

L- Leadership Development:

Over the summer I participated in a program hosted by the Casualty Society of Actuaries. As part of this program I was assigned a small group to complete a case study and present our solution as part of a competition at the end of the program. During this project I had the opportunity to take a leading role to make sure everything was getting done in a timely manner and ensure that all of our research, calculations, and results were reasonable. I have seen similar actuarial science case study competitions advertised at OSU before and I would be interested in participating in the future to further develop my skills working in a group on a problem in actuarial science.

S- Service Engagement:

As I did in high school I have continued to do volunteer work through my church and occasionally volunteered at the soup kitchen I volunteered at for an extended service project requirement during high school.

G.O.A.L.S.

  • Global Awareness: In planning how I will complete my general education requirements I have chosen a selection of courses covering various cultures. If I am able to do it and still graduate in 4 year I would also like to take the opportunity to study abroad. I am not sure where I would like to go, but I’m sure it will be a great experience.
  • Original Inquiry: Although research is not usually a part of an actuarial science student’s college experience and for mathematics majors it tends to be relegated to graduate school, I think the knowledge that I gain in the area of statistics would allow me to help with analysis for other research projects. If possible I might like to look into being involved in research this way.
  • Academic Enrichment: I am and will continue to take a substantial number of honors and upper level courses throughout my academic career in pursuit of an industrious dual degree in mathematics and actuarial science.
  • Leadership Development: In various types of group work I like to take some form of leadership. Through the various group projects I will inevitably encounter and the discussion based setting that small sizes of honors classes lend themselves to I hope to further develop and exercise my leadership skills.
  • Service Engagement: In my junior year of high school I had to devote 24 hours of service to a single organization in order to get an in depth grasp of what the organization is doing and its impact on the community. For mine I volunteered at the Holy Rosary Saint John’s Community Kitchen, and I would like to continue to volunteer there in the future during my time at Ohio State.
