G.O.A.L.S. #4

For the fourth visit Columbus trip, Our HES group went to The Melt in the short north. The place was larger than expected, and had a some interesting wall art that was filled with pop culture references. We sat down and I ordered a whole Hot Italian sandwich with a side of fries. The fries were tasty, but the sandwich was one of the best tasting sandwiches I have had in a long time. Having been there once before and not enjoying the sandwich I had ordered the first time, going there again taught me that even sandwich shops deserve second chances. The Melt is definitely a place that I would recommend to a friend, and I am planning on going there again.

G.O.A.L.S. 2 & 3

Juniors Tacos would have been a rough walk if it were no for the COTA. Located off south campus, Junior’s Tacos is a food truck that we found to be in the same yard as multiple U-HAULS, and in front of what appeared to be a gas station. We ordered off a small menu consisting of tacos, burritos, and quesadillas, and waited a very short amount of time for our food to come out. The burritos were not only good enough to consider going again, but it was such a good experience that I recommend anyone who wants authentic Mexican food but doesn’t want to wait to go there.

The uniqueness of the variety of flavors at Jeni’s Splendid Ice Cream was what first caught my attention when I first entered. From Brumbleberry Crisp to Gooey Butter Cake to even Pistachio & Honey, I could not believe many of the flavors that they had come up with. I ended up getting the standard 1 scoop of salted caramel and 1 scoop of Gooey butter cake, both of which ended up, literally, mouth. The only thing that was possibly able to disappoint me was the fact that my much-anticipated flavor, salted peanut, was no one of the options of ice cream that we had to choose from. It is a place that I am looking forward to returning to, and one that I would recommend to a friend.

Of the three experiences, while I enjoyed the food/treats better at Junior’s Tacos and at Jeni’s, Eden burger was the most unique, and ultimately my favorite. I’ve had Mexican style burritos and ice cream before, so the first experience having a vegan burger stands out the most. By going through the list, I have not only seen the wide range of food options that the city offers, but I have seen the diversity that is present there too, through the many oriental, Mexican, and European style locations that are on the food lists, and I expect to visit more of the places on the food related lists. To other people who are looking to explore the Columbus area, go out of your comfort zone, do something that in the past you wouldn’t be able to see yourself doing, because whether you enjoy it, you’ll have experienced a unique part of the unique city of Columbus.

Artifact 2

Flag Football. My first college intramural sport, and the first sport I have played since my sophomore year of high school. It felt really good to have something that I was committed to be something that could take my mind off the daily grind.

About Me #2

Gallup top 5 strengths

  1. Restorative – I feel that I am really driven to fix shortcoming, in myself, in other people, and in other things. I seek to restore those shortcoming and develop a habit of self-improvement
  2. Achiever – I am not content until I have achieved the most I possibly can. My desire for people to recognize what I do it part of the reason for this non-contentness with mediocrity.
  3. Learner – going with the theme of self improvement, I feel that learning as much as possible is the best way to improve. It doesn’t have to come from books, it can also be about myself.
  4. Harmony – I feel that conflict between team members is the most detrimental thing to problem solving and seeking to find an area of agreement is the only solution to fixing that problem.
  5. Intellection – Introspection is essentially understanding one’s self, and is an important aspect in self improvement

G.O.A.L.S.

For the Columbus exploration aspect of the Humanitarian Engineering program, we are tasked with going to multiple places throughout Columbus that fit within a theme, and belong to the list that the theme encompasses. Through this program, I hope to gain a better understand and feeling for life in the city of Columbus and outside of Ohio State. The lists that I chose are both food related, and consist of both local food favorites and food trucks that are found throughout Columbus. I really enjoy eating foods, so I am most looking forward to experiencing the many types of food that Columbus has to offer.

The first location that we visited was the vegan burger joint that is right off the edge of south campus, Eden Burger. The size of place was what first caught my attention, Eden burger was probably no more that 6 feet wide, and only had four four person tables. It felt cozy. To be honest, not being a vegan myself, and having very low expectations for burgers that don’t contain meat, I was surprised by Eden Burger. It wasn’t the greatest burger in the world, the beans in the burger made it taste odd compared to the other ingredients in the burger, but it was good nonetheless.

Artifact 1

Proctor and Gamble offered a job shadowing experience to my high school, which I applied to my both my junior and senior years. Despite being denied an interview my junior year, senior year I was able to land the experience, where I learned a lot about the different disciplines of Engineering.

About Me

Michael Frank is a first year student at the Ohio State University, and is part of the Humanitarian Engineering Scholars. He grew up in Liberty Township, Ohio, with three brothers, one of which is currently a Junior at Ohio State, and the others are younger, one being a junior in high school, and the other finishing their last year in middle school. He attended and graduated from Lakota East High School, and in his first two years of high school he was a wrestler, was part of his schools robotics team the year after, and in his senior year, participated in a 3 day Proctor and Gamble internship. Throughout high school, he also participated in many other activities, which included the Mu Alpha Theta Math Society, Tutoring other students in multiple subjects (ranging from mathematics all the way too American History), and the district wide Latin Club. When not studying, Michael is either having fun with family and friends, watching his favorite shows on T.V., and both working and working out at his local gym. Michael has interests in both math and theoretical physics, but instead is pursuing a major in chemical engineering, an passion which was sparked by his proctor and gamble internship and the chemistry courses and teachers he had in high school. He aspires to be an engineer rather than a scientist because he believes that while discovering the fundamental laws that govern our universe is exciting, engineers help people in their occupation by using their knowledge to solve other peoples problems.
