Indigenous Artists and Globalization

By Amanda Fralick

Andean pottery, called Valdivia ware at the time, was introduced around 2700 B.C. Some say it is very similar to Japanese Jomon period ceramics which Andeans might have seen from Japanese fisherman but we are not certain of its origin. At this time, ceramics and weaving were the extent of Andean art. The Chavin were working on textiles and ceramics between 1800-1200B.C. The Moche mobilized huge blocks of clay to build temples around 200-700 A.D. The artists of this time were focused on producing silver and gold jewelry. As the Moche expanded in conquest, its art portrayed ideas of war and victories, like the taking of enemy heads.

The relevance of these items today is extremely important for our culture today because it gives us an idea of the customs that Andean cultures valued. We are able to understand that textiles represent social status and pottery depict stories that the culture holds onto. The art during the Colonial period shows us the struggles to convert to Christian ways and the changing of their whole lives as they knew it. All of the art from this period shows the oppression and poverty that Andean’s faced, and this is why all of this art is so vital. It gives the world today so much information on Indigenous cultures and how they developed.
