Year in Review

Since coming to OSU, I think that I have changed in a few ways. I think that I have become more independent, more outgoing and more willing to trying new things. I definitely expected college to be hard, which was true but it is also very liberating. Some preconceived notions that I had about HSS was that we would learn about the health field and different professions within the field, which was also true. I thought that both would help me develop as a person which did happen. My goals for my 2nd year in HSS are to complete my 40 hours of service at an organization that I truly want to be involved in and help 1st year HSS students. Next year at OSU, I hope to figure out what I want to do as a profession and figure out if I should double minor or not.

Career

As my first semester at Ohio State ends, I now feel like I have a clearer understanding of what it will take to get into the Nursing program and what my options are if I am not admitted. If I do not get into the Nursing program, I now plan to major in Health Sciences. I also feel like I have become better at utilizing all of the resources that the university offers to the students. Trying to balance school work, extracurricular activities, and a social life has been somewhat challenging but I still try to workout at least a few days out of the week to relieve stress and stay healthy. I try to find someone to workout with so I have more motivation to run or get to the gym. My friends and I are trying to run a marathon next fall so I believe that training for that will allow me to stick to a plan to stay healthy and in shape. The faculty, upperclassmen, and university staff have a lot of wisdom and advice and I think that I will be able to access that knowledge by attending office hours and connecting with upperclassmen through clubs or through my classes. Next semester, I would like to become more involved with clubs and service groups and try new things. In my future years here, I would like to continue to earn good grades and hopefully find a club that I really enjoy and can really invest in.

About Me

Hi! My name is Maddie Fowler, and I’m from Dayton, Ohio. In high school, I ran cross-country and track, involved myself in many clubs, and volunteered at a hospital. I enjoy running, reading, discovering new places, and trying new things. During my freshman year at Ohio State, I hope to succeed academically and thrive in a new setting and chapter in my life. In the future, I hope to work at a hospital as a nurse and later return to achieve my Master’s degree and work as a nurse practitioner.

G.O.A.L.S.

Global Awareness: Students cultivate and develop their appreciation for diversity and each individual’s unique differences. For example, consider course work, study abroad, involvement in cultural organizations or activities, etc .

Original Inquiry: Honors & Scholars students understand the research process by engaging in experiences ranging from in-class scholarly endeavors to creative inquiry projects to independent experiences with top researchers across campus and in the global community. For example, consider research, creative productions or performances, advanced course work, etc.

Academic Enrichment: For my upperclassmen interview, I interviewed my RA, Grace. Grace is in the nursing program at Ohio State and wants to eventually be a Family Nurse Practitioner and work in a doctor’s office. Once she graduates, she wants to work as an RN for a few years and then return to school to receive her NP degree. Grace is unsure what division of the hospital she wants to work in. To achieve this, she plans to apply for something called an externship at Northwestern before her senior year. She says that she learns a lot through clinical and that she also plans to work as a PCA in a hospital for experience.

For my second year interview, I interviewed my pediatrician who is actually a Nurse Practitioner. She has actually been my pediatrician since birth, and I only recently stopped seeing her. She attended Ohio State for her undergraduate and her masters is from the University of Texas. She said that she chose to work in a doctor’s office because of the lifestyle. She enjoys the set hours versus the typical 12 hour shifts of a nurse. She also chose to be a pediatric nurse practitioner because she wanted to be able to connect with her patients throughout their childhood and early adult years. She said that the most rewarding part of being an NP is being able to diagnosis and prescribe medicine as she knows that she is truly helping her patients.

Leadership Development: Honors & Scholars students develop leadership skills that can be demonstrated in the classroom, in the community, in their co-curricular activities, and in their future roles in society.

Service Engagement:

Coming into school, I decided that I would volunteer more second semester so I could get used to the change in first semester. During first semester, I volunteered at Community Commitment at a local garden for a neighborhood near Indianola and also volunteered at Buckeyes for a Cause making bracelets. Second semester, I volunteered at MLK Day of Service at COSI, as a Park-Stradley tour guide, selling NSPIRE Wellness Rave t-shirts, at Matthew 25 Ministry packing a truck to take to homeless camps, and at the Red Cross Blood Drive at Park-Stradley.

At Community Commitment, I volunteered with my Peer Mentor Group at Indianola’s community garden. We cleaned up the garden and I personally hand-mowed the lawn with a scythe for 5 hours. At Buckeyes for a Cause, I made bracelets for children with cancer with fellow HSS members for 1 hour in the Strad lobby. At MLK Day of Service, I went to COSI with some fellow HSS members and we constructed boxes for elementary students to use to learn about dissections for 5.5 hours. At Park-Stradley, I was a tour guide for incoming students along with a few other volunteers for 2.5 hours, showing them rooms and around the building. At the College of Nursing, I volunteered with my roommate and sold NSPIRE t-shirts for their Wellness Rave for 2 hours. At Matthew 25 Ministry, I also volunteered with my roommate and packed and inventoried items to bring to various homeless camps for 3 hours. At the Red Cross Blood Drive, I volunteered with my roommate and volunteers of the Red Cross and signed people in and contacted people to show up for their shift for 1 hour.

I think the most memorable experience volunteering was making the boxes at COSI. I was surrounded by fellow HSS members and we were all working as a team which made it much more fun. I think it was mostly memorable because I also learned about transplants in school and was really interested in them and would have loved to have one of these boxes when I was in elementary school. At COSI, I counted and packaged medical gloves for the individual boxes and then went through the individual boxes and made sure everything was in order.
