We have two graduate research associate positions (GRA) available (Autumn 2019 or Spring 2020)

1. Graduate Research Associate (Food Process Engineering) (Application of Super heated Steam in Food Plant Sanitation) (Autumn 2019 or Spring 2020)

The Ohio State University, Departments of Food Science and Technology /  Food, Agricultural and Biological Engineering (FABE) / Center for Clean Process Technology Development (http://u.osu.edu/foodsafetyeng/) is recruiting a doctoral level graduate research associate student. Successful candidate will be a part of a university-industry multidisciplinary team and conduct research on food safety engineering aspects superheated steam in food plant sanitation. The graduate research associate will help with the following project goals

Project Goals and Responsibilities:  

(a)   Evaluate microbial destruction kinetics of pathogenic and spoilage organisms and/or other hazards in different food plant surfaces as a function of different super-heated steam parameters

(b)   Work collaboratively with industry in the development of a pilot scale superheated steam equipment & evaluate its efficacy in food manufacturing environment.

(c)   Work collaboratively with the university-industry based researchers in advancing research and outreach goals of the laboratory.

(d)   Assist the investigator in the up keeping of the pilot plant and laboratory management

(e) GRAs can also contribute to food engineering teaching and industrial outreach activities.

The student will be expected to publish research findings in peer-reviewed journals, food processor factsheets, present research findings in conferences/meetings, and contribute to preparation of technical progress reports.

Desired Skills/Experience:

(a) Hands-on experience and mechanical aptitude in working with advanced food technology machinery

(b) Experience with statistical experimental design, and data analysis would be plus

(c) Prior course work and/or hands-on laboratory experience with food microbiology is desired

(d) Ability to learn/adopt skills and knowledge in solving “real-world” problems.

(e) Creative and independent research abilities with teamwork spirit.

(f) Excellent oral and written communications skills.

Education:  

(a) M.S. or B.S. in Agricultural, Chemical or Food Engineering, Biotechnology, Food Science and Technology or related discipline

(b) Superior GRE / ToEFL (for international scholars) scores

(c) prior experience in preparation of scholarly manuscripts is a plus

Salary and Benefits:

2. Graduate Research Associate (Food Process Engineering) (Food safety aspects of high pressure based technologies) (Autumn 2019 or Spring 2020)

The Ohio State University, Departments of Food Science and Technology /  Food, Agricultural and Biological Engineering (FABE) / Center for Clean Process Technology Development (http://u.osu.edu/foodsafetyeng/) is recruiting a doctoral level graduate research associate student. Successful candidate will be a part of a university-industry multidisciplinary team and conduct research on food safety engineering aspects high pressure based technologies for food and beverage processing.  GRAs will work collaboratively as a part of multi-disciplinary team of university-industry team of researchers. In addition to conducting basic and applied food engineering research, GRAs can also contribute to food engineering teaching and industrial outreach activities.

The ideal candidate will have

(a) Degree(s) in Chemical / food/agricultural engineering, biotechnology or food science and technology. Excellent academic credentials, GRE & TOEFL (international applicants) socres.

(b)  Hands-on experience and mechanical aptitude in working with advanced food technology machinery

(c) ability to work in multi-disciplinary research environment. Interface with academia and industry

(d) Experience with statistical experimental design, and data analysis would be plus

(e) Prior course work and/or hands-on laboratory experience with food microbiology is desired

(f) Ability to learn/adopt skills and knowledge in solving “real-world” problems.
