ACES Mentorship Capstone Project: Spring Interview with Jackie!

What class on your current schedule do you think will be the most challenging and why?

In the fall, Jackie is taking accounting which is known to be a pretty difficult class. She has already taken the CSE course for business majors, so she is hoping they are similar because she enjoyed that class.

How do you manage your time between your involvement and your academics?

Jackie recently joined Pi Beta Phi sorority, and she said that joining a sorority has helped because everyone focuses on academics and their involvement outside of classes. Since she is part of this organization that collectively is dedicated to their academics and involvement, it is easier to do both if the clubs you are a part of embodying it.

Have you enjoyed living in the living-learning community in Smith-Steeb? Why or why not?

Jackie really enjoyed living in the living-learning community in Smith-Steeb! We both agreed that it was an immediate community at Ohio State which is very nice to have as an incoming freshman. She said it was easier to get to know the people living around her and in ACES better, and she said that the scholars class helped!

Have you had the chance to explore your desired career through internships, field experiences, etc.?

Jackie is still majoring in marketing and hopes to someday work for a cosmetics company in product design and marketing. This summer she has the opportunity to work for an accounting firm in Cincinnati. She is going to be working as an assistant for someone who works for both private and corporate firms, so she is excited to have the experience of both private and corporate life!

What is your favorite memory from last semester?

Jackie said that her favorite memory from this past semester is getting to know the two girls next door, Abby Jerold and Abby Dalton (the Abbys). She said that they became super close over this past year, and she is sad to not be living near them next year! Even though the pandemic limited what we could do this year, we both agreed that it had been a great school year, and we are excited to return in the fall!

ACES Mentorship Capstone Project: Spring Going into Columbus Event with Jackie!

Unfortunately, Jackie and I were unable to do the Going into Columbus Event in person, so we discussed some of our favorite places we have been this year and some places we hope to go in the future!

We both agreed that 1126 in the Short North had the best sushi. I haven’t been there in person, but I’ve ordered it through Grub Hub, and it was super good! Jackie had been there in person and said that she is excited to go back sometime! Jackie had also been to Tai’s on Lane which has really good hibachi, and she said that she always has leftovers since the portion sizes are huge. She also really likes Town Hall in the Short North. She has been there because her big works there and said she will probably be there a lot in the fall!

I am really looking forward to getting to go to Crumbl in Dublin in the fall! Jackie had been this semester when friends were visiting and said that it is perfect for a sweet tooth! Lincoln Social in the Short North is another place be both really enjoy! It is on a rooftop, and it had really cool views. Both of us really want to go to Sw’ish social, a new ice cream sandwich place! We both have seen it on TikTok and agree that it looks super good!

Overall, we have had a great time exploring Columbus this year both have a list of places we want to visit when we return! We both agreed that the pandemic forced us to explore places off campus, and we are really grateful for being able to explore this amazing city!

ACES Mentorship Capstone Project: Fall Interview with Jackie!

Jackie is a first-year marketing student from Loveland, Ohio, and she is interested in pursuing a Fashion Studies minor. She knew that she wanted to major in business but wasn’t sure if she wanted to do accounting or marketing. In high school, she spoke to several teachers about this decision, and she decided that she was more passionate about marketing and didn’t want to take as many math classes that accounting required. She has always been really interested in commercials in addition to how marketing and packaging can draw in a customer.

Her dream job is to be working with a cosmetics brand in its product design and marketing. She said that when she is buying a cosmetic product the packaging is an important factor to decide between different brands, so she would really enjoy designing the product packaging to make something enticing to young girls. Since we are mostly learning online this year, Jackie has had to adjust her learning and studying, so it is tailored to online learning. Since she is an auditory learner, she likes to read notes out loud in the Smith-Steeb study rooms alone and the Ohio Union basement study rooms.

Outside of her studies, Jackie is involved in Guiding Eyes for the Blind which is a student organization that trains service dogs for those who are visually impaired; in this student organization, she helps to walk the dogs. She is also a part of Pen Pals, but they were unable to do much this semester due to the COVID-19 restrictions. Since it was difficult for clubs to meet and the involvement fair was difficult to navigate, Jackie is interested in trying more organizations when things are more normal. Currently, she is going to participate in PHA recruitment in the spring to join a semester, and she might join a business fraternity. She is really enjoying the community that ACES has provided this semester!

She chose ACES because of our focus on community service and advocacy. In high school, she was very involved in community service, and she was on the board that planned service projects for her entire high school. She also volunteered a lot at InReturn, an organization that provides viable employment to individuals who have suffered a neurological injury, disease, or disorder through manufacturing Job and Life Skills Programming. Tutoring was also another form of volunteering that Jackie enjoyed in high school; specifically, she helped tutor for a family that has adopted 12 children, all with disabilities, in addition to their 3 biological children. The Ingle family receives tutoring from students from our high school four days a week, and Jackie was very involved in this program. We also all agreed that it was a great perk that ACES scholars live in Smith-Steeb their first year.

When arriving on campus this fall, she was most surprised to find out that you are constantly running into people you know on campus. Since Ohio State is one of the largest universities in the country, she thought that it would be rare to see someone from her hometown or someone she knew from classes. She was pleasantly surprised to find that this year most of South campus is where the freshman are living; she also thought that since she went to a Cincinnati Catholic high school, it feels like she knew a lot of people before beginning her undergraduate career since Ohio State has a very large population from the Cincinnati Catholic schools.

Interview Questions:

  • How do you like to study? Have you found a good place to study on campus?
  • What kind of involvement are you interested in?
  • Why did you choose ACES?
  • What is your dream job and why?
  • What has surprised you about OSU since arriving on campus?

ACES Mentorship Capstone Project: Fall Going into Columbus Event with Jackie!

Jackie, Morgan, and I had planned to meet in person and get ice cream at Jenny’s, but unfortunately, Morgan returned home to St. Louis due to COVID. Since this is the semester of adapting, we met over Zoom on November 18th, and we discussed different parts of Columbus that we enjoy visiting in our free time. Jackie has been able to visit the Short North a significant amount this semester, and her sister is also an Ohio State student and has taken her into other parts of the city. She really likes different restaurants in the Short North such as Forno Short North and The Eagle. Jackie’s parents are also from Columbus, so she has visited Columbus several times before becoming an Ohio State student. She has also recently visited the Scioto Mile with some friends, and she is hoping to be able to return when the weather is warmer.

Last year, I was unable to leave campus much because I was very busy with my course work, but I really enjoyed going to Stauf’s Coffee Roasters off of South Campus. I went to Stauf’s Coffee Roasters the first time when my ACES mentor took me last year, and I really enjoyed the atmosphere and the coffee! I also really liked that it was within walking distance of the campus, so I didn’t have to worry about paying for a Lyft or figuring out the COTA. I went back to Stauf’s Coffee Roasters several times with friends and alone to do homework, get coffee, and spend time with one another. I really liked going there as an escape from campus, and I really enjoyed being able to be able to take a walk off-campus. I would recommend it to a friend because I think Stauf’s Coffee Roasters has really good coffee, and I personally really enjoy going to different coffee shops. I think that Columbus offers many unique coffee places, but I think my personality aligns with the laid-back atmosphere of Stauf’s Coffee Roasters.

Morgan was able to leave campus more than I was last year, and she really enjoys going to Clintonville especially visiting Rag-O-Rama. She also really enjoys going to restaurants and coffee shops. We also discussed other places we enjoy going to in Columbus. I have been to German Village with my family last fall; I also have been to Short North a couple of times this semester with my family, with my friends, and with my sorority. We all agreed that it is always fun to eat pizza at Forno Short North with some friends or grab some ice cream at Jenny’s! We all expressed interest in visiting the Scioto Mile and Franklin Park Conservatory and Botanical Gardens, so we have multiple options for our trip into the city next semester! This semester has been very strange, but we also agree that it has allowed us to leave campus more than a normal year. Since there are a lot of rules on campus and in dorms, leaving campus and visiting other places in Columbus was really nice because we were able to sit down and eat with friends as opposed to eating alone in our rooms. It was also nice to leave campus because life felt a little more normal.

We thought that the most confusing part about leaving campus is figuring out the COTA since neither Jackie nor I have a car and getting a Lyft or Uber might be expensive depending on where in Columbus you would like to go. Our favorite thing about leaving campus is seeing all of the different neighborhoods in Columbus. Columbus is very different from our hometowns, so it is really fun to learn about the different neighborhoods and their personalities. Exploring a new city can be difficult to navigate and intimidating but exploring Columbus has been a really fun part of our college experience. We thought that someone wanting to experience Columbus should learn how to use the COTA because it can really teach you how to navigate the city. We also recommend exploring the city with friends because it is safer, and you can build lifelong memories! I think it also might be helpful to step outside your comfort zone and try new things! Columbus has many different types of restaurants, shops, and activities, and I have had a really fun time pushing my boundaries and learning more! I think that college is a time to figure out who you are and your interests, so it is a great opportunity to try new things.

I really enjoyed getting to know Jackie and Morgan better! Morgan and I lived very close to each other in our dorm, Smith-Steeb, last year, but we didn’t get to know each other very well. Jackie and I went to the same high school, and we shared a class or two but had different extracurriculars. I am very excited to get to know Jackie and Morgan better and grow closer in the mentorship program!

Pen Pals Seminar: The LunchBox

On November 14, I attended a seminar about food insecurity in Ohio, and I also learned about a program called The LunchBox Ohio. The LunchBox Ohio is a summer food program that provides nutritious lunches over the summer to children who have high food insecurity in Columbus. They especially provide in areas that are considered a food desert. I really enjoyed that one of their main focuses is providing food that is nutritious because it is very important for developing children to have all of the right nutrients and vitamins. I really enjoyed hearing about this non-profit, and I hope to become involved with a similar organization in the future. After hearing about The LunchBox Ohio, we assembled snack bags so that our pen pals had food over Thanksgiving break because some of our pen pals may be food insecure.

Empowering Girls to Combat Violence

During my junior and senior year of high school I was my class leader of Women Empowering Women, a
school club that hosted events to empower women through education and discussion on gender relations and issues in the modern world. On March 18th, we held an event to educate our student body on the issue of sexual assault. We held presentations from our local police department, our guidance department, campus ministries department, and Women Helping Women, an organization in Cincinnati that works in crisis intervention to help survivors of sexual assault and on local college campuses. Our goal of the event was to educate and inform our school community on the prevalence of sexual assault, provide resources for survivors, and present ways to help a friend who has been sexually assaulted.
