End of Year Reflection

This year, I took a heavy course-load for both semesters. In the fall, I took Mechanical Engineering, Material Science Engineering, Intro to Biomedical Engineering, Biology, and my final math class that involved Calc 3, linear algebra, and partial differential equations. Same to say, this was a pretty stressful semester, but made it through very successfully. I really enjoyed the classes I took and I feel like I got a lot out of them. Looking at even this fall semester versus the first year, I could see myself growing as a student: the way I studied had improved, my note taking became more efficient, and I worked on communication with peers and professors as well.

In the spring semester, another stressful work-load of Organic Chemistry, Physics E&M, Anatomy, and a numerical simulation class for BME. This semester, I feel like I perfected my study method. I would go to the library Sunday-Thursday for at least 4-5 hours and study. This allowed me to break studying for exams up more and made me a lot less stressed before exams. Rather than cramming 10 hours the night before, I would only have to study a few hours the day before and I felt very confident going into these tests. Anatomy may have been my favorite class yet: the professors were engaging and I believe the way the human body works is fascinating. I was so intrigued by this, that I have arranged to do research in my professor’s research lab next fall.

Both of these semesters have continued to help me grown as a student: better studying, better communication, and better learning overall. I will use what I have learned as my base for next year and hopefully I can continue to keep improving.

Vision Statement

I have now finished two years at Ohio State, and now have two more years to go. I have made it through all of the “weed-out” classes and am now taking domain classes specific to my biomedical degree. I am very excited for this next step in my academic career. In my remaining time at Ohio State, I will begin research with an anatomy professor in the fall, as well as continue looking and applying for internships and co-ops that will give me a good taste for what specific field of Biomedical Engineering I want to go to. I hope to become more actively involved as a committee member in Block O in my time left as well. It has been a great time going to sporting events here, and I would really enjoy being able to help enhance the stadium atmosphere any way I can.

Abstract

Hi all,

My name is Eric Fogle and welcome to my Honors & Scholars e-Portfolio!

On this page, you will find some information about myself: where I come from and where I hope to end up in life. There will also be an artifact section about some things I have done at Ohio State during my time here. The GOALS section will specifically be about things I have and hope to accomplish at OSU. The other section is a career tab in which I discuss what I work I have done in the past and what jobs I hope to find in the future. The year in review tab will discuss each year of my time at Ohio State and go over what worked, what was difficult, and what I learned from all these experiences.

Semester in Review

This was from the soccer game I attend with the rest of the Biological Scholars Program. This was one of the first times I developed relationships with new people here at Ohio State and still continue to talk and hang out with these friends I met on this night.

Over the course of the semester, I have gotten to really make some good friends in the Bio-Sci community who also live on my floor. By getting to know my fellow Bio-Sci peers, I was able to schedule my classes for the next semester with them, so we could all study together and help us all succeed.

Also over the semester, I played a lot of soccer and basketball, which improved my physical, mental, and social health. I believe it was important for me to take a break from studying and get some exercise, which not only improved my physical health, but cleared my head of stress from classes for a few hours.

In the classroom, I took engineering, chemistry, and calculus courses. While these classes were challenging, I believe that I set up a good schedule for myself that would optimize my studying and  learning. This set me up for good success not only for this past semester, but also for future semesters to come.

Second Year:

This year was definitely more challenging than the first, but also much more enjoyable. The classes I took involved more specific engineering classes that will help me in my Biomedical Engineering majors. These included: mechanical, material science, and biomedical engineering classes, as well as organic chemistry and E&M physics.

I am excited for the future in store for the rest of my time here. I will be taking domain classes specific to my major, which will help me greatly in finding an internship and a job after college.

I also am excited next year to live off campus with people I met originally through Bio-Sci. We have a great relationship and believe we will enjoy our time together for our last two years as well.

Academic Enrichment: I hope to take courses that will fulfill the prerequisites to get me to vet school. I am currently a biomedical engineering major, which means I will need to take some extra classes to fulfill that requirement, but I look forward to that because I am just getting a wider range of knowledge from this university. I feel like by doing this, I will get to experience more of what Ohio State has to offer, and will make me a better thinker and well rounded individual.

One instance of my experience in academic enrichment was my work in engineering over the last semester. 3 other people and I worked on an Advance Energy Vehicle design for our engineering class. This project was over the entire semester and was a big success. For more information, you can see our work at https://u.osu.edu/engr1182sp177237groupc/

Service Engagement: I feel very blessed with the opportunity that I have to come to this university. I feel like it is important to give something back to the community that has already given me so much. By doing service, I think I can also get more real world experience. By going out in the community, I can see first hand what could be improved in the community or think about how to develop solutions to improve the quality of the society.

One instance of my service engagement is volunteering with a friend for a split the pot at the Columbus Crew game. We went there well before the gates opened and started selling tickets from then to halftime. My friend was involved in a group called ,”Rally Cap Sports,” that organizes sports games for special needs kids, and some of the money from the split the pot went to this group. This event was wonderful because I got to help a friend out, and also raise some money for a wonderful organization.

Original Inquiry: I think that getting an opportunity to do research would be one of the most beneficial things to do here. This will give an excellent opportunity to fully understand a particular field of interest and also will look very good on a resume to vet school. I think it would show real dedication to the scientific field, and will make me think at a higher level after that research concludes. It would also give me a chance to develop solid relationships with professors who could write me recommendation letters in the future.

I have not gotten involved in research so far here at Ohio State, but my plan is to begin looking for Co-Ops and internships once I officially get accepted into my engineering major.

Career

At the moment, I am volunteering at a Vet’s Office back in my hometown of West Chester, OH. I have worked here since 7th grade, and I still continue to go to the office when I come home from Ohio State. I help them out mainly by just offering another set of hands that can be used to work in the lab or exam room.

I am in my second summer of managing a pool near me and doing technical work on a wide variety of pools in the area as well. Over the course of this job, I have learned management skills, and learned very useful craft skills that will help me with hands on work in future.

I am hoping that I can use all these skills to help me in a future job in the engineering field.

zzzvetoffice Kingsgate Animal Hospital in West Chester, Ohio

Since I was in 7th grade, I have volunteered at an animal hospital close to my house. I have shadowed the veterinarian there, gaining both scientific knowledge and communication skills that are necessary with the job. This is the vet’s office that my family has taken our pets for about 15 years. I consider myself very fortunate to be given this opportunity to learn what it takes to be a successful veterinarian first hand.

For my first 2 summers, I was just standing and watching how appointments would go, and then the vet would teach me various scientific ideas as well, like how to calculate a dosage, what medicine to give, and also some anatomy which was extremely helpful when I took anatomy in high school. During my 3rd summer, I was able to do some of the things around the office such as developing slides, drawing vaccines, and helping hold down some of the more energetic animals that would come in.

This place is extremely significant for me because every time I walk in this place, I am reminded of my long life goal of becoming a veterinarian. It is still a long road before that dream can be a reality, but it is nice to walk in to that office and see what can be 10 years down the line. I also am reminded how important it is to help people. Without the kindness of this veterinarian taking time out of her very busy schedule to teach me all these various things about the practice, I would not be the person I am today.

This picture is of Fred Beetman Park here at Ohio State. On April 21, 2017, I got to run a 5k with some friends at this location. This 5k was to raise money for an organization called REACH, which focuses on suicide prevention and awareness. This was a wonderful event to participate in because I knew I was running for a good cause and help raise money for an organization that saves lives year in and year out.

One of my favorite things at OSU is attending football games every Saturday in the fall. I am hoping that I can get more involved with Block O in the next two years because I feel like I have found a real connection by spending time at Block O meetings and attending different games.

This picture was taken at BuckeyeThon. This was easily my favorite part of second semester. Not only was I with friends for 12 hours straight, but I raised 1000 dollars for cancer research. This experience also meant a great deal to me because BuckeyeThon occurred on February 9th, the same day that my cousin who passed away from cancer last year was born. Watching my cousin fight cancer was the roughest time in my life, but also gave me an insight on what countless other families face as well. BuckeyeThon reminded me how precious life is and continued to inspire to work in a field that can have a direct impact on the health and well-being of others. This just continued to tell me to keep working hard in school, get a good job in a health field, and work to make the lives of patients better.

About Me

12592449_1684121485136123_860876483568731927_nI graduated from Lakota West High School in 2016. I have and am continuing to shadow a veterinarian and volunteer at the vet’s office, which I have done since 6th grade. I was section leader in my school’s marching band as well. I chose the Bio-Scholars program here at Ohio State because it is very science focused and could offer great opportunities. It also sets up an environment where it is easier to go to peers and study together. I am currently a biomedical engineering major with a pre-vet path. I hope to attend Ohio State’s Veterinary School after I complete my undergrad. I enjoy playing saxophone.
