Giving Tree Donation Drive

  • From Monday Dec 4th to Wednesday Dec 20th, FOCUS is asking for donations of winter hats, gloves, scarves, and blankets. These items will be donated to Star House, an organization who operate’s the only 24/7 drop in center in central Ohio for youth ages 14-24 who are experiencing homelessness.   • Donations can be dropped off at CBEC 188 between 9-5 am.

FOCUS Members Bonding Night

  • Tuesday November 28th from 6 -8 pm in CBEC 267 FOCUS hosted a member’s only group bonding event! At this event members were able to drink hot coco, eat cookies, decorate tote bags, and watch Barbie
  • The only thing members need to do is to show up!

FOCUS Blood Battle Flyer

  • Thursday November 16th from 10 am – 7 pm in the Ohio Union Great Hall Meeting Room 1, FOCUS helped host a blood donation event for the annual Blood Battle between OSU and ❌ichigan!

  • We are trying to filled all 96 donation slots, great job Buckeyes!

FOCUS How to Network

  • On October 30th from 1:30 – 2:30 pm FOCUS hosted a student lead workshop on How to Network in CBEC 267.
  • The presentation covered, an ideal 20-minute networking meeting, how to prepare a 3 – minute thesis, and 1 – minute elevator pitch. After the presentation participants participated in a round table elevator pitch/networking session.
  • This event was a low stress way to get into the art of promoting yourself and your work!

FOCUS Professional Development Panel

  • On Oct 6th 3-4 pm in Fontana 2000, three distinguished scientists came to OSU to sit on a Career and Professional Development focused panel! The panelists discussed work like balance, the importance of mental health in both grad school and industry, and how to navigate getting what you want out of your career.
  • Dr. Lauren McCullough earned a bachelor’s degree in chemical engineering in 2012 from Pennsylvania State University. Following her bachelor’s degree, Lauren went on to attend Northwestern University where she earned her Ph.D. in chemical engineering in 2017 under the mentorship of Prof. Justin Notestein. Her Ph.D. studies focused on heterogeneous catalysis, reaction engineering, and transition metal sulfides. Lauren also worked as a visiting researcher at Humboldt University in Berlin, Germany during her doctoral studies. Dr.McCullough joined the Dow Chemical Company in Midland, MI in 2017 as a Senior Process Engineer and now works as an Associate Research Scientist on the Hydrocarbons Research and Development team, where she works on new process technology development.
  • Dr. Maude Desroches earned her bachelor’s degree in chemistry from Laval University in Quebec City, Quebec, CA in 2013. Following graduation, Maude worked as a research assistant at Laval University where she worked on synthesizing functional carbon nanotubes and semi-conductive organic polymers. Maude continued her studies at Laval University, where she earned her master’s in chemistry in 2015 as well as her Ph.D. in chemistry in 2018 under the mentorship of Prof. Jean-Francois Morin. Maude also worked as a visiting researcher at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in Cambridge, MA in the Timothy M. Swager Laboratory. Dr. Desroches joined the Dow Chemical Company in Midland, MI in 2018 as a Product Development Chemist and now works as a member of the Personal Care Research and Development team.
  • Dr. Grace Jang earned her Ph.D. in inorganic chemistry from Georgetown University in 2015 under the mentorship of Prof. Timothy H. Warren. Upon completion of her Ph.D., Grace worked as a postdoctoral researcher at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in Cambridge, MA from 2016-2017 where she gained skills in organometallic and polymer chemistry under the advisement of Prof. Richard R. Schrock. Grace has numerous years of experience in the chemical industry, first working as a Senior Chemist at the Dow Chemical Company in Midland, MI, then as an Information Scientist at CAS, as well as a Senior Scientist at Abbot. Dr. Jang joined Owens Corning in 2022 as a Product Innovation Leader and currently works as a Technology Scout.

FOCUS Recruitment Night 2023

  • We had a great turn out September 14th for the FOCUS Barbie themed recruitment event! Everyone in attendance learn about who FOCUS is, what we stand for, what we have accomplished, and what we hope to accomplish the upcoming year.
  • We then played a wild game of Barbie/STEM themed Kahoot! in which the winning team got to take home stereotypical Barbie!

Galentine’s Movie Night presented by FOCUS and ChemTALKS

  • Please join us February 13th, 2023 5:30 pm in McPherson 1015 to watch the Netflix documentary “Picture a Scientist” featuring this year Mack Lecture speaker Dr. Raychelle Burks
  • There will be popcorn, snow cones, and pizza
  • Following the movie there will be a debrief to discuss some of the heavier topics of the movie

 2023 FOCUS Research Symposium

  • On April 7th 2o23, FOCUS is inviting everyone with a love of STEM to mark your calendars and join us during all-day celebration of STEM research.
  • The symposium will include:
    • Student poster presentation and talks open to undergraduate, graduate, and postdocs
    • Open professional development discussion panel with successful women in STEM
    • Seminars by guest speakers Prof. Annabella Selloni (Princeton) and Dr. Rebecca Green (Bristol Myers Squibb)
