My name is Katelyn Flowers, although I go by Katie most of the time. I am a first year student at the Ohio State University majoring in Biology on a pre-med track. I am also an Environmental and Natural Resources scholar. Coming from a small high school with a graduating class of fifty-nine students, I am very excited to see what a big university like Ohio State can offer me. I also love running and being active. I enjoy visiting new places in Columbus to eat, have coffee or hang out as well as listen to different styles of music.

It is important to me to discuss a little about my senior year of high school. I really found myself in that last year. The faculty and staff really stressed “Changing Our World” for the class of 2015. I had never pictured myself in the world until they gave us this topic. We were challenged to combine a need we saw in the world with our passions and talents to generate ideas of how we would change our world. My ideas have changed since then of how I want to affect my world, but the concept of change is still strong in my mind.

One thing my small high school could not offer me however was opportunity. This is what I knew I could find at Ohio State. I am hoping to find many different places to become plugged in and explore the sciences and medical field I am aspiring to be in after college. I am currently undecided on what type of career I want to pursue after undergraduate and medical schooling. By interning, volunteering and possibly working under different people in different environments, I am hopeful that I will explore different options available to me.

Although I am not interested in pursuing a career in the environmental sciences, I am very excited to be a part of the Environmental and Natural Resource Scholars. I enjoy doing all things outdoors rather than indoors and I also am looking forward to discussing the group’s core values in class, specifically sustainability. Sustainability is something I have heard about a lot but I had never known about how I could encourage sustainability in my own life and in my own world. I am very interested to see what I will learn.

My past in high school has shaped me to what I am today. However, now I am hoping to be shaped again in college. I know that I can discover more about myself including a career I want to pursue. I am excited to go further into my Ohio State experience and learn more about the world I live in and learn more about myself.
